Dumping the 243wssm going to 243 win HELP?

Ok, my father is 84 this year and he is freaking out about not being able to find ammo, brass etc for his 243wssm. I have scoured the internet for components and all I can find are supply and demand prices(rip offs). I am thinking to try and convince him to forget about the 243wssm for now and pick up a 243 win. I was thinking the SAVAGE 19716 10 TH XP 243 NIKON or the SAVAGE 11LWH DBM. He doesn't was a really heavy rifle anymore. He will be using it to shoot dear and varmints in Colorado. The reason why I wanted him to switch is because of the availability of loaded ammo and components. OK down to the main question he and I like Savages(accutrigger models only). So what would be the best somewhat light weight rifle with great accuracy in the 243win?

If you want a nice rifle and one that shoots REALLY well, consider a Kimber Longmaster. However, they don't come in .243Win. However, you CAN get one in 22-250. If you use the 50-55gr pills, there is hardly a better varmint round. And there are now several excellent "deer" bullets. One is the Barnes Triple Shock. They are death rays on deer at ranges up to 300 yards!

Think you already named it. Granted I really like the older models re barreled. Not a huge fan of the accu trigger after working a 3screw over

If you like the accutrigger......you got it made: Pic up a hog hunter 308 (cheap) a shilen 243 1in8 can be had off the shelf from midway anytime, rebarrel and restock if desired.
Cheap,fast,easy.

There is a group on Facebook called "The Brass Bank". I've see. It on there a few times just the little while I've been on. Honestly to me dumping a rifle due to not wanting to spend the money on brass and buying a rifle and all new components doesn't make the most sense to me. I seen new 500ct boxes of bras at lohmans for 400 bucks. If you anneal it it last pretty good.

What rifle does he have now? Will the internals handle a 243 length bullet?

If they will just re-bolt and rebarrel if he likes it.

Bartline has Two 6mm #19s in stock right now, all you'd need is a 308 bolt assuming that the WSSM size mag well can be made to fit a 243 size bullet.

What d.id and Snert said!

The simplistic thing would be to buy a used Savage short action beater and get a pre-fit 243WIN barrel from Northland or like that.
You can do all the work your self as well as piller bedding and glass bedding.

Especially for hunting, the 243 WIN ballistics are hard to beat!
I started long range bench rest with a used BVSS stock, PTA action and a Shilen pre-fit 243 WIN 1 in 8 barrel and 205 gr bullets.

It shot lights out! But the barrel life is less than a 6BR.

A well loaded 243 WIN will have ballistics better than a 284 WIN with 180 gr Bergers!

I have replaced my 30-06 hunting rifle (Savage) with a home made sporter based on VZ24 Mauser action and WWII surplus large ring 7X57 barrel. 7X57 will kill any North American Game and a fully loaded 243 WIN will satisfy most really long range shots. The 7X57 isn't a slouch either.

Well, He has a cheap Winchester 70 243 WSSM. I was just leaning toward the Savage because I have an LRP in 6.5 CM and it shoots great and the barrel is easy to change with a set of go-no gos. I just figure my father being 84 he doesn't have much more hunting left in him and wanted to get him into something quick, cheap with ammo available. who knows when Winchester will do another run of brass.

Yep, I see it on their website too. They pretty good with letting you know what's backordered or unavailable if you place an order? Reason I ask is I see they list Jamison International's 25 REM too & I haven't seen that anywhere in years. Used it for 6HAGAR parent cases until the factory Hornady brasd appeared a few years back. Never done business with LohmanArms.com either.

Just hit Gunbroker, there are currently 213 Savages and 100 R700s listed in 243 Win

I have a friend who has an FFL that i use to do my transfers. He bought a AR chambered in the WSSM. He shot it a couple times and bought a slew of ammo and brass for it. I think he said he is going to sell the AR and get out of the caliber. If you want it let me know and i will give him a call and see what is going on.
