Dud CCI BR Primer

I read not too long ago that someone here experienced a dud CCI BR primer. Never had one fail to ignite... until today. It was a CCI large rifle BR primer in a 22-250 case. I re cocked the bolt and tried twice. Kinda creepy pulling a loaded round off the mag follower with a primer that has been struck but failed. I shoot CCI primers in most of my rifles and have never had this problem. Has anyone else experienced this. If i recall, there was a lot of skepticism when the other guy reported a dud primer. I'm a believer now.

I experience several LR & SR CCI primers that wouldn't go bang years ago, that is the reason they aren't my first choice in primers to date.

I had the same thing happen to he about 10 years ago. I was working up some loads for a 22-250 using the CCI BR2 primers and had 1 or 2 that didn't fire. I called CCI and they ask if I would returned the un-fired,dud) cases and also what was left of the 100 remaining primers. About a week later I got a very nice letter from them with several explanations as to what might have happened. They also sent a brick of BR 2's,1,000) for "all my help". Well worth the effort on my part, and great PR on theres.

In all my years of shooting, I have had one 7-1/2 not fire,no pellet), and three CCI primers not fire, with pellet).

But more troubling, I have had many, and i mean MANY) CCI primers hang fire - from a "Clickbang" as one continuous sound with two syllables, to a "click . . bang", two completely separate sounds separated by silence.

I have thrown away batches of CCIs when I have had 6 to 8 hang fires in one box of 50 rounds :, :, :,

.

I've run into a few CCI Small Rifle primers that wouldn't pop. I mentioned it to CCI and they guessed it was a problem with the firing pin not hitting hard enough?? Maybe one out of 100 was a problem. I just pull the bullet, dump the powder, neck size, repime, reload and don't think about it till the next time. Maybe 5 or so out of 1000 so that's not bad enough to worry about. I inspect the primers and can see that they have burned but not enough to set off the powder. Some will go off with a hammer strike and others won't.
I still use CCI! :D

Me too :,

If you guys were to rate primers for accuracy and low ES, what order would you list them in??

I would switch if I had faith in another primer.

A good shooting friend is also an engineer of explosives, and he says that there are three phases, chemical states) of Azide, and the patent for the best phase is held by Winchester - the other guys use lower state Azides.

Anyone use Winchester primers for BR or long range shooting?

Thoughts on Remington??

I have never had a CCI primer not detonate. But I only put maybe 2000 rds of centerfire downrange each year as opposed to some of you guys that shoot a lot more.

I have had quite a few factory loaded cartridges not go bang mostly Remmy and Federal. Once got a bad lot of shotgun shells and only 1 in 5 or so would fire.

I use winchesters in my hunting rifles. No problems with them and they are mostly factory guns shooting .75" or better with reloads. I would hate to drop the hammer on a 14 point whitetail and all i hear is click. That would blow.

I use CCI #34 and # 41 mil spec primers because I shoot "lots" of .308 in my M1A and .223 in my Mini 14. You don't want a "slam fire" in a M1A!:o
They are rated as "magnum" primers and the cups are harder than the LR and SR primers. The only problem I've had was that it seemed that the firing pin didn't hit them hard enough,in my XP rifle) to set them off. Never had a dud in the gas guns.
And besides, who's got time to check ES on a 200 round string
out of a M1A? :D
Had a few duds but on close inspection they were burned, just didn't pop! One out of maybe 100 isn't bad odds!;)
