Rick and Ron and whoever else behind the scenes that pulled this off against the odds really outdid themselves.....
Securing private land to build a range is a tall order.
Securing private land to build a range is a tall order.
the Dome is a secret complex where scientist, engineers, nuclear phys, and the great minds of shooting gather in the great state of Tenn, just kiddin it's a farm with a great place to shoot...
There really is a 250 feet tall government communications antenna sitting on top of the highest point in smith county overlooking the DOME. It is 2300 yards from my shooting building and has a clear sight picture into my shooting bays. They were hanging new antennas on it one day and I went up there. I asked the guy on the ground if there was any cell phone service on the tower and that I knew it was a highway patrol relay. He sail no cell phone on it and there was highway patrol relay on it. He admitted it had FEMA on it and I quote...……..
"Several other government agencies that I am not at liberty to disclose".
So I am sure the FBI and CIA communications at going through this tower. Who is to say they don't have a spy camera on the tower watch DOME activity.
The control room is 12 in thick concrete, walls, floor, and ceiling to withstand 150 mph winds. The building sits on 6 feet of gravel which sits on a copper plate to ground it from lightning. It is temperature controlled inside and has a LP gas 8 cylinder Chevy engine to power an emergency generator.
Also, every few days Ft Campbell sends a couple of helicopters flying low across the DOME.
Like our friends at Dead Zero, a little to the south east, we've had our troubles with the weather. But we are still moving forward and expect to open our new range for members use in a little more than a week. Yesterday (Tuesday) we had a crew of volunteers and we were able to paint our new cleaning/reloading/utility tables and install all 42 new bench tops. I haven't completely given up on holding the first UBR match of the season on March 2nd, but the forecast calls for rain most days between now and then and I expect it's just going to be too soft to be used for match competition. I expect to hold our first match at Two Brothers Rifle Range near Auburn KY where we have been for the past two seasons. It's almost certain the we will be able to shoot on our range in April.
Rick
I hadn't heard about this new range previously, but it looks great. About 2 hours from me. Will you be holding any F-Class matches there this year? Where exactly is the range?
