Dreaded Carbon Ring

Barrel cleaning procedures, followed by the fearing of the carbon ring, has almost become a pagan religion.

At some point, I expect that there will be some involvement by someone sacrificing a live chicken.

I will say this. I've chambered about 300 barrels in the last 3 years and I dare you to scratch a stainless steel barrel with a copper and bronze brush. I dare you. Don't believe me? Take your bronze brush and put it in a drill and take one of your old barrels and see if you can scratch the outside. All you will do is leave a color that looks like copper. Because bronze cannot scratch steel. That's the idea of using bronze to clean barrels.

Stop reading everything on the internet and just go do it for yourself. Do that little test and you can see it for yourself. You can bear down pretty hard with a Scotch-Brite pad before you're going to start to cut stainless. And Scotch-Brite pads are made to cut steel. Bronze will not cut steel. End of story.
Glad somebody is taking a positive stand for the bronze brush

Not to mention he says there is no such thing as neck tension. It’s neck interference he claims and runs .003 in all his rifles. I knew from that single vid he was full of it
If that's what you got out of that video, your ability to comprehend and retain what you're watching apparently needs a lot of work. I'll pray that you can get better at it.

You typed 3 sentences. In two of those sentences, you lied to everyone here, twice... and the third one is your opinion, which doesn't matter at all, because you have no evidence supporting that opinion and I have mountains of public evidence to the contrary.

It's no surprise that you can't see truth when presented, and spread lies. If you wanted to understand, I could help you... but all you're concerned with is falsehood. So sad.

Hey, don't let the fact that I've been absolutely FLOODED with emails, DM's, and public reports of people doing as I describe in that video and seeing a very dramatic improvement in their performance stop you from trying to undermine my efforts. I know how desperate people are to keep the truth hidden when it wasn't their idea. What other than desperation would cause people to take time out of their day to run someone down on the internet? It's such a cowardly act, and just because it's commonplace you think your subconscious will let you get away with it? There's nothing that can justify that behavior. I pray you get better and whatever has caused you to be this way is removed from your life. Whatever it is, you clearly can't handle it. I can relate, as I was once in that spot. ...but there's a better way.

Oh, btw... carbon rings are easy as pie to deal with.

CLR, a bronze brush on a drill, stick it in there and press the button until it's gone. Done in less than 5 minutes usually.

People being afraid of doing this, only demonstrate their lack of experience. (lack of round count)

I feel like some people may start administration“CPR” to some dead barrels
and could bring them back to life

I didn't respond to him... just as I said I wouldn't.

... but hey, don't let that stop your seething hatred and anger from spilling all over the place. I won't be responding to you again either.
Hatred and anger? I don't know you, I am not angry with you, I do not hate you! In what portion of my post did you sense my hatred and anger....sounds like someone needs therapy and another time out!

You other folks, you see through it don't you? I know you do. You see how it's always the same people doing the same kinds of divisive things here, year after year. They zero in on something falsely, then be disrespectful, then try to play it cool when called out. Then they insult you and try to get you to go away. It's so ridiculously predictable.

Playing cool-guy on the internet being witty and dismissive only works here. It doesn't work in real life. No one that participates in that ingenuine behavior will ever advance.

You'll never meet a hater, doing better than you. Ever. Heard David Goggins say that, and he's right.

Just remember, recognize them for what they are... and pray for them. They will never receive grace nor will they offer any. It's a sad way to live. Be sad for them and keep them in your rear view.

The only hatred and anger being spewed is coming from you, I never insulted you or your reasoning. Yet you feel you have the high moral ground to judge others and attack them on the internet. Folks that live in glass houses should not be throwing stones, you need some help!

First off, I’m not a hater, a simple observer. I used to witness some of the BS on SH…..Have not looked there in years, nor given you 5 minutes of attention in about that long.
Your RF stuff,in regard to cleaning is absurd. I shoot RFBR and have, at a fairly high level for 30 years.
There is your opinion…..there are the practices of hundreds of RFBR shooters and smiths……I’ll go with them.
Your video shooting the copied ARA target scores mostly 50’s with a few 25’s.
That would put it at the bottom of pretty much any match shot.
Not hate just simple observation.

So any way, here’s Wonder Wall.

You could be trimming your brass too short which is causing a carbon ring to build up easily and fast. If you don’t have a blue print of your chamber, Reloading All Day has a video on how to find your exact chambers COAL from the base to the neck of the cartridge. Use that as a reference.

I’ve never had a problem with carbon rings just because I commit to regular maintenance on my rifles. Both my hunting rifles and competition rifles of mine have their own separate cleaning cadences. I bore scope each time when clean to verify my chamber and rifling are clean. To each their own on their cleaning cadence, but regular cleaning, more than every 500 rounds on a center fire, helps make cleaning easier. 500 was just an arbitrary number, but the longer you wait to clean the rifle, specifically a center fire, the harder it will be to clean, clear the hard carbon and prevent carbon rings.

I have no idea about rimfires, go to an Olympic Smallbore shooter on their cleaning cadence. They will have the best practices, but from what I know, they don’t clean their barrels often.

Oh and I use both CLR and Boretech for carbon.

I only use CLR on stainless steel barrels and you need to be using a good bore guide. Something like a possum hollow bore guide. I only let CLR sit for a few minutes before I flush it out with 2-3 patches of isopropyl alcohol.

I’ll use Boretech carbon on any carbon steel barrel and or stainless.

My abrasive of choice is KG-2.

I've only ever had a carbon ring issue in one rifle, 22-243 Improved, and I suspect this is exactly the cause of it.

Most would probably be surprised just how quickly a carbon ring can develop. It doesn't take very many rounds fired for a carbon ring to get started.
