Downloading a 7mm Rem Mag

Can the 7mm Rem Mag be downloaded to .280 Rem levels and maintain good accuracy? I don't necessarily need the extra power of the magnum, but I wanted a .284 that I could find factory ammo for easily if I can't find components or forget ammo during a hunt. I realize factory ammo isn't downloaded, but I would rather shoot full power and have to sight the gun in again then be out of a hunt because I couldn't find .280 in stock at a local store.

Thank you!

Im not shure I understand the question,,,but,,,there is not a lot of diff between a 280 and a 7 mag,,,why try and download a hundred fps and loose accuracy ,,,,most reduced loads are not as accurate as full power loads untill you get down to cast bullet vel,, and use fast powders that give hi pressure but low vel,,,,I wouldnt change a thing,,,sight in the gun and go hunt and have fun,,,,hope u get a big un,,,Roger

You can load a 120 or 140 gr bullet to 2900fps or so and it'll be plenty accurate. Just gotta work you load slow so you don't get into pressure spikes. I don't think the 140s out of my 7mag kick bad at all and they run about 3200. They definately kill stuff dead

Hunt up some H-4895 and work up a great shooting reduced load for it...
No powders work as well as H-4895 for reduced loads.......
There are a few factory loads that are reduced also...

Check the lyman reloading manual as it has alot of reduced loads.Maybe it is time for a 7-08 in your future.

H 4895 produces 1/2 MOA accuracy at reduced load levels in my R700 .300WM. You should be able to the same with the 7 Mag. I use Nosler BT's.

Yes the 7 mag can be down loaded with LOTS OF POWDERS and get great accuracy. I have found that down loading the 140 to150 gr bullets to 2800 to 2900 fps at muzzle actually kills the average 125 to 175 pound deer inside 200 yards in their tracks better than full velocity 7 mag loads with the same bullets. Especially inside 100 yards. Check most any loading manual for the data which will be between starting loads and mid loads.

McBain,

Yes the 7mm RM and other cartridges can be downloaded. Check the manuals and data.

If you want 280 R. performance and rifle weight consider the 270 Win! What with all of the modern bullets available a 270 can be loaded to about the same performance as a 280!

Also the 270 is very popular and ammo is found everywhere.

A search found that Federal has a 145 gr Low Recoil factory load for the 270.

Note that the 270's bullets are .277" dia. and the 280's .284".

That's only a .007" difference!
