Downeast Regional Mid-Range Match Oct. 5-8 in Maine

This will be a great match in fall weather and featuring our new electronic targets.

The Downeast Fall Regional Mid-Range Match will be held on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Oct. 5-8, on the 600-yard range at the Scarborough Fish & Game Club in Scarborough, Maine. This is an NRA-sanctioned regional match, and all shooting will be at 600 yards.

Individual matches will be held Saturday, Sunday and Monday, with the 60-round aggregates from all three days being used to determine the overall winner winner. There will be division awards for Service Rifle, NRA Match Rifle, F-Open, F-Target and AR–Tactical based on the NRA rules for each rifle.

A team match will be held on Friday. All shooting will be at 600 yards.

Mid-Range & F-Class on Columbus Day Weekend (Weather is usually the best time of the year - fingers crossed idea). Great way to end the Northeast/New England Season and finally Team Matches! Great range to shoot on, and great proximity to a lot of history, great food and activities (Beaches, Historical Sites and much more) for family members excellent as well.

We had a great match this weekend, the electronic targets worked great.

I'm trying to get some friends up from CT for the match, any info on accommodations?

There are lots of hotels in a wide price range ... this is Vacationland, after all! Within a mile of the range are a number of accommodations ranging from $81 to $150 a night. They include:
  • Comfort Inn & Suites (207.883.2700)
  • America's Best Value Inn (207.883.6004)
  • Admiral Hotel (207.883.9206)
If you want something more luxurious, there are just tons of choices in downtown Portland, which is only 15 to 20 minutes from the range. My favorite is The Press Hotel (207.573.2425) and the Hilton Garden Inn (207.780.0780).

There is, or course, the airbnb route. There should be plenty of options that time of year.

Crap. Thats a tough wekend to pick.
Sorry to hear that. Still hope you make it. We made our choice, based on trying to fit in a Great finish to the season that didn't conflict with any other shooting events by our neighbors in NE. We plane hold another Regional early next season, the same format, on Memorial Day Weekend next year. (Tag out early!)

How have you guys been liking the new electronic targets? Are they as accurate as the manufacturers say? The idea of not having to pull targets sounds awesome but there's some hesitance with errors and what not.

We have been very pleased. As we have found it does make it easier on the shooter and can make a match run faster. Accuracy has been very good well within the current rules (actually well below the SD ShotMarker publishes. Consistency has been very good as well. We've only seen a couple of ghost shots that were easily identifiable due to the angle and velocity extremes. When scorers do their job and pay attention sorting out crossfires is much faster (and a lot harder to say it wasn't me). While re-calibration is not required often, we are going to do it before every major match and as we square up alignment from the firing points to be as close to "dead on" with each target, we'll do it again as we complete that task. We have seen the overlapping shockwaves even at 600yds, which have been inconsequential, but thats how the system works. Better and more sensors don't register adjacent shockwaves as it sees them as off target

With the 8 very high performance and extremely sensitive sensors on each target rapids in XTC (no issues so far in Mid-Range Prone) have shown only minimal noise from adjacent targets at 300 and 600yds. At 200yds it is more noticeable, but so far results have exceed our expectations, but we are going to breakup XTC relays in rapids into two groups shooting a target apart. We plan to do some much more detailed analysis with some equipment and personnel from a very nearby Defense contractor in our Fall Fun matches to get the data to model the shockwave patterns and see what it looks like as a bigger whole "range picture".

For competition I think some people might be confused between the physical paper target and the electronic center of the target. The electronic center is what the targets are calibrated to, and that has is very precise. Extra care needs to be taken in placing the aiming targets with the center of the paper at the center of the target (especially in F-Class) to be certain that they are aligned to the center and square to the square target frame and sensors. A degree or more in tilt of the target will place the group on paper offset from the electronic reading (you can stand back and hardly see that degree of tilt of the paper, but you can see when you square the paper up - the shot group is right where the ShotMarker System told you it went.

The target faces (mounted in essentially to mil spec aluminum frames) need to be mounted as precisely as they can be in the frames which are dimensionally within .5mm to match the 1.5mm SD of the electronic record. It takes some getting used too, but some very very good shooters have adapted rapidly (and they were very very skeptical leading up to the implementation) and we have seen no difference in scores from what we would expect from them and they have been very pleased.

As a side note we've seen some SS and Expert shooters shoot far better scores with the visualization of their groups right next to them on the line on tablets. It still comes down to the shooter and their ability to read the wind and mirage and stay focused.

We are really looking forward to the series of major events we have coming up this fall and hope for a good turnout for the Regional in October.

For those traveling to the match, one of our favorite places to gather after shooting is Nonesuch River Brewing. It's up the road just about a mile and offers great beer and excellent food at a reasonable price. It's in a new post-and-beam barn and very comfortable inside. Plug this address in to you GPS and you'll see it's very close and convenient: 201 Gorham Rd, Scarborough, ME 04074.

Let me recommend the fish and chips, the burgers and the BLT. YMMV
