Down Memory Lane - J.C. Higgins .22

First off, it's not for sale. :D Took a friend to the range and he dug out his old .22. Some of you may remember when you could mail order a rifle and have it delivered to your door. The photo has the original shipping box,(that let everyone know what was inside) complete with postage stamps on it (two .30s and a .15 cent, .75 total), the factory box, and paperwork. Man, those were the days. :) Some research, made by Hi-Standard 1955 to 1959.

I love the JC's , I and brothers have several, I have a model 28 from my Dad, And i found model 31 at a gun show here in Michigan, the thing about 31 is, it shoots shorts, longs and long rifles, but you can also shoot the CCI quiets semi automatically flawlessly, it's like having a can.

I shot the Quiets, both 750 fps versions and all that could be heard is the action cycling.

Now with retractable sling!

Nice find HogP . Delf , that Higgins was my first 22 . It was so beat-up I let it go after the firing pin went . About 20 years ago I picked up the same Model in Mint Condition . Just before I picked it up , I sold a like new Higgins Scope like you have pictured ( always liked the look of the exposed Brass ) thinking I would never find a like new Higgins 22 again ! I think the sliding Bolt was made on both sides of the Action . Don't know which Bolt side design came out first . Kids eyes bug out when they see that Red Sling pop out of the Stock .

I forgot to mention the owner of the rifle also has the original scope as shown in the photo above. It is really a neat rifle with the sling on a spring loaded reel and able to shoot all .22 rimfire rounds.

I have a JC Higgins in .270. Was my grand father's deer rifle. He died in the mid 60s. Not sure the guns age but he used it for years prior to passing. I've Never used it since my father passed it down to me but it's in mint condition. Sorry for the intrusion of a bigger caliber but the JC Higgins part is an old memory.

So how does it adjust for different loads...short, LR etc?

The bolt spring is the proper tension and the ejection port is large enough to eject the different loads. Most .22 autoloaders made back in that era shot the three loads. My first .22 was a Sears, tube magazine, and it was similar to the early J.C. Higgins models.
Being usually afflicted with mafundsalo, shorts were always the ammo du jour.

The JC Higgins I had when I was a kid was a single shot .22 rimfire rifle. I had more fun and memories
with that rifle than all I own today...guess because I was a kid and it was my first rifle.:D Thanks for
the memories hogpatrol!;):)
