dove decoys on wire

I know.. off topic.. sorry.. but, I have a dove field and we have a 3/8" Aluminum wire across the field for the doves. We tie a monofilament (fishing line) to each decoy, then hand toss the plastic dove decoys over the wire, and tie the fishing line to a wooden stake..pain in the butt.. doves go right to the decoys. I was thinking about using a wooden dowel to clamp the decoys on and then use a 35' "hot stick" to hang the dowel rod on the wire.. have any of you fabricated
something similar so that one rod or fixture will hold 6-8 decoys??? And hangs on a suspended wire?

I made something out of various sized EMT so that it would not require a powerline. I think my finished dove antenna was about 15 or maybe 18 feet tall. I experimented with different heights and found this was as high as I could go.

My contraption looked kind of like a TV antenna. What I discovered however is that there was a good likelihood that dove would be spooked by the contraption. Sometimes they came right to it other times they came toward it and flaired off too far away to get a shot.

I took a 4 foot piece of rebar and drove it into the ground and slipped over the rebar the first section of EMT.

My normal procedure now is to use two separate spinning reels with dove decoys tied on to the end. I cast the decoy over the powerline, reel it up so that the decoy is pressed against the bottom of the wire and let the weight of the rod hold it under tension so that it doesn't blow around too badly in the wind.

In my experience if the decoys bounce around in the wind it will spook dove. How do you envision being able to keep your apparatus from bouncing around in the wind?

It sounds like a good idea and probably less hassle than dealing with multiple fishing rods to put more decoys in the air?

I did some thinking and cobbled together a bunch of raw materials ( aka junk) and came up with this. Works pretty well..

As I mentioned I cobbled together this thing from junk I had laying around .. I like to refer to as, "raw materials for future projects." Anyway, the counter weight is a piece of AL that I sawed up from old "knocked over" road sign that had been laying around for years. The length and weight worked out perfectly on first try. Luck..I hope the counter weight does not spook the doves..

I pick up old fishing rods/reels from yard sales for a few dollars each. Tie the decoy to the end of the line and cast it over a power line. Then reel the decoy back up to where it is right up at the line and let the rod lay there on the ground to hold the decoy in place.

In my TO (theater of operations) Mr "green jeans" would probably "cit" me for not having a fishing license.. :)

I wasn't aware number 8's can damage power transmission lines? Insulators? Don't usually see dove on them..

If breaks the small aluminum stranded wire. Wont drop the line because there is one strand of steel in the middle. But normally there will be 1 or 2 broken strands around the outside when we go fix them. I dont think doves are the intended target when they get an insulator (its the insulator.) Its always along gravel roads and sometimes right in front of a house or farm where there's teenagers around. Im not sure about the #8 shot but I think alot of doves, hawks, and buzzards around here get shot with whatever happens to be in the truck.

My dove decoys have a V notch in the bottom. We just walked along a fence line and clipped them on. Never tried putting them on a high line like that. Clothes Line cord and trees worked if there was no fence. Wished I was back in S. OR. The old feed lot I hunted is probably thick with them about now.

Good hunting.

Steve :)

Sorry, just had to look to see if you were from Texas.

Do you have any lower lines or fences in the field? When we need decoys at all, we have about a dozen with wooden clothes pin glued to the bottom. Just walk over to the fence and clip a few on then move down a couple fence posts and sit on a bucket. Tends to work very well in the Amish country we do most of our dove hunting in.

Never tried getting decoy up to a tall line though.
