Donut Pic

You gotta do what you feel is best but this is how i feel- first off i dont feel like using 2 different dies timewise. Second is tolerance stacking- one die moves it .001 off center and the other does too- now you got some that are .002 off and some that are straight. Using a fl bushing die we can get the correct neck tension AND size the cases in one swoop

Thanks Dusty for the explanation. Still curious as to why i need a small base body die.

With the FL Bushing die, if the Lee Collet size the neck to the size you want, you don't need the bushing in the FL die to set headspace.

I've stopped using the expander button on the FL Bushing die. I had minor issue with Headspace...seems like the button would pull on the neck/shoulder junction and possibly pull headspace back out.

The ring is only a few thousands high but you can feel the bullet hit it.

Full disclosure - this is not my case. Private tuffluck was discovered hiding these donuts and is now on latrine duty.

I haven't ran into that yet, but I do sometimes check for inside donut, with a paperclip and feel no bump/ring.

On avg, how many firings do you guys see before donuts develop?

He was suggesting a small base die when we thought you were collet die sizing only. Donuts may never show up with good dies, and when they do who cares? Seat above them and keep moving forward

I have always used a FL busing die and am starting to see dounts on some of my brass. Can they be removed?

Just an FYI for those wondering what a donut looks like. I cut this out of a 6.5x284 necked up to 284 and shot a few time

Hey Doug, looking at the two profiles of the cut portions (right side and left side) where the donut ridge would be, I don’t really see a ridge.

I don't see a donut.

Could it be like in Jackie Schmidts thread. A line from necking up?

That’s a pronounced ring. A very meticulous friend has made a precise bushing die to actually ream those out of his brass. It really seems to contribute to his great scores. I’ve just wondered if there would be a resulting thinning out issue somewhere in the case.

That’s a pronounced ring.

What I thought tool. Maybe as a result of not necking up the full length of the case? When I bother with this I run an expander mandrel well into the case, far enough to get the full mandrel diameter below the shoulder/neck junction.

How's this done?

I've used a neck reamer to cut away donuts before, never a neck bushing....

Might be more to how he achieves high scores than using a custom bushing though I'm sure that'd help.

Possible when doing anything with tools. Reamer, neck-turning improperly, sizing cases too much so they expand in weird places when fired... all to be avoided.

I probably used the wrong term with bushing. He’s a manufacturing industry guy with some access to rarified special equipment. He made a jig on an EDM machine I believe it was, that has an ultra-precise hole in hardened steel which controls a reamer and holds his cases. The reamer is turned from a simple drill. Stability of the case in the jig is paramount otherwise you’d do more harm than good. But that jig took many machine hours to make, appears as involved as a big, one-off custom rifle action, so its not really feasible for others, but is good thinking, assuming brass doesn’t migrate around much. But he gets more firings than anyone I know with Lapua brass.

Right... that I can relate to. Your friend’s a lucky guy with that equipment and skills to use it. Rest of us make do with stuff like Wilson trimmer & case holder, add their neck reamer appropriately sized for the neck ID involved.

That case pictured though, neck wall’s deformed evenly on both inside & out. Reaming will really thin necks at that point. Donuts - as we know them in bottleneck cases - form at the same point but only inside, as shoulder brass moved forward. Not the same condition as what’s shown in that pic.

When I was a young private a sergeant asked me if I knew where the MPDS was. I got the Military Police part duh but for the life of me I could not figure out the DS part. He explained to me that it was the Main Post Donut Shop now get your a^^ down there and get a dozen.

BTW I like maple bars
