Donut Pic

Hey Doug, looking at the two profiles of the cut portions (right side and left side) where the donut ridge would be, I don’t really see a ridge.

In the picture looking straight on I can see the shiny line but it’s hard to discern how pronounced the raised lip is. Would it stop a bullet from seating smoothly?

If you look at the profile of the case wall, you can see the taper from the case mouth to the 'donut'. It looks to have been pushed to the outside.

For some people, these donuts can be most helpful:

I've never had donuts on the inside of the neck (FL Bump sizing). However, since bump sizing, sometimes doesn't go all the way down to the neck/shoulder junction, i was getting donuts on the outside, right at the neck/shoulder junction. This started happening on the 3rd/4th firing of Hornady Brass.

I've since moved to Norma Brass and the use of a Lee Collet Neck Die. And i still bump the shoulder down to get correct headspace. So far, no donuts...but i should double check

Great picture Doug, I like it a lot.

Clearly you are just starting out using the LCD (Lee Collet Die). it is great, until reality catches up to you.

The reality is that after 2-3 times using it you won't be able to chamber your rounds. You'll need a small base die to squeeze the base back, you'll be lucky if that works. You may end up buying new brass. Or you could keep forcing your action until that develops issues. I hope you're using a cheap action.

The other reality is that you have donuts, you just don't know it yet, but you will see it on the target soon enough.

Hey Doug,
How are you dealing with the brass donut?

Joe

What are your recommendations Joe?

Curious, why would i need a small base die? I'm guessing FL Bump sizing will not reach the bottom near the case head? Why would I not be able to chamber my rounds? They chamber fine after 7-8 reloads.

With the Hornady Brass i was able to get 7/8 reloads, probably could've gone another 2-3 reloads, but i decided to switch to the Norma.

You have to keep the size in check with a fl die or itll get to the point they wont come back. If it hasnt happened yet it will given the right situation

I do use a FL bushing die.
I use both a Lee Collet and FL bushing die. The Lee collet's mandrel should help with donut issues from what I've read. And so far doing it this way has made my brass much more consistent than before.

The ring is only a few thousands high but you can feel the bullet hit it.

Full disclosure - this is not my case. Private tuffluck was discovered hiding these donuts and is now on latrine duty.

You gotta do what you feel is best but this is how i feel- first off i dont feel like using 2 different dies timewise. Second is tolerance stacking- one die moves it .001 off center and the other does too- now you got some that are .002 off and some that are straight. Using a fl bushing die we can get the correct neck tension AND size the cases in one swoop

Lets just say it's best for everyone to not show up at Bayou and have Doug discover you've been hiding donuts. No matter how tasty...it's not worth the pain.
