Donut and resizing???

New to relaoding and have a guestions about the reference to donut?

Also, a partner was reloading the other day. He was resizing,necking down) some 308 brass to 7-08. I noticed some ripples at the base of the neck.

He says no big deal it won't effect anything..

What if any effect can this have on accuracy or anything else.

DON'T EAT DONUTS ANDS RELOAD AT5 THE SAME TIME!!!!

THE GREASE FROM THE DONUTS RAISES HELL WITH THE BRASS.

regards to wrinkles on the necks - i assume your friend is fire forming his brass?? that's why he's not worried about it.

Donut in laymens terms equals thicker brass at the base of the neck. As brass ages it flows and a reloader trims it off.
The brass flowing into the neck from the shoulder is usually thicker which results in a Donut at the bottom of the neck.
Or donuts are made when making brass from other cartridges by squishing the thick brass from the shoulder up into the neck.

Its very easy to see the donuts in my 6ppc brass by eye alone.
Seeing as my 68gn pills do not seat deep enough to contact the donut I leave them alone. Dang gun outshoots me donut or no donut.
Neck turning can remove them. Some folks go as far as using interior neck reamers to remove them.

As long as your chosen pill does not seat deep enough to contact the donut I would'nt bother worrying about them. If its close you need to keep an eye on them in the future tho.

On the other hand if you have a tight neck chamber and the bullet does seat into the donut you can have some nasty problems


Brass wrinkles are usually caused by using too much lube. Of course they will blow out with fireforming.
Imperial sizing wax is the answer.
