Dont ship barrels in pvc tubes

This happens all the time. The caps are brittle. They break and the empty tube is all that arives.

Dave probably knows a lot of things Im just learning. Thats a fact. I dont have that many guys ship in pvc. Maybe only a couple a year. But I just noticed today, its like a 50/50 chance on those who do.

A few years ago, FedEx charged me a surcharge on a shipment because I shipped a barrel in a tube. they said a tube rolls off their conveyor, so they charge a surcharge for it. Now I save the box they come in from the barrel manufacturer.

UPS did the same to me. I think it was like $15-20 more, after the fact too.

A gent shipped me a barrel in a large over sized box a number of years ago. It was used and he didn’t price it until I got it and tried it out. USPS dropped it off with a big hole in it, no barrel. Turned in claim, I get a letter about every 2-3 months, the are still looking for my item.
They may be rough on stuff, but they are persistent lol.
Went and looked, it has been 4 years this month.
Lol, got way more response looking for an item than I did getting ripped off of a $250 USPS money order. Some poor soul is probably walking in circles looking for the barrel.

This exactly.
They come down chutes and end up on conveyor belts.
Round items will roll off and get possibly get damaged or not end up
going to the right truck or trailer.

Barrels are weird to ship. I had one come from Bartlien to my Smith, and it traveled to more places than I have been.

If you put stuffing in at both end of the container, does it really matter what the barrel is shipped in? [Yes, other than a steel tube welded shut at both ends]

The other thing to consider is some company like UPS and USPS will charge more for round over square or triangular because of how their conveyor belts and scanners work. Round things roll around on their belts and can cause issues. They're post-bill you if it cause a problem and has to hand sorted.

I got one of those triangular boxes a couple weeks ago. First time I've seen that!

Route out a 2x4 and cap it with light gauge AL. Then wrap 2x4 cardboard or just buy heavy “caliper” cardboard tube. Shilen ships in cardboard tube with “driven” in steel end caps.

And, Shilen ensures the barrel isn't moving inside the tube.

If the barrel isn't able to moving inside the tube, it won't act like a battering ram when the package is dropped on one end.

USPS has a 4" square, 36" long box. Maybe $4.00. Cut to length.
Foam "Pool Noodle" from Wally World. Maybe $3.00.
Barrel "centered" in foam tube, zip tied along the length and at the ends of the barrel so it can't move. Extra length at ends as padding. Trim/shorten box to fit foam. Can't move and LOTS of stranded packing tape. Same box to Oregon and back a couple of times, IIRC. No issues. No tire marks on the box either.

I DO keep my barrels in PVC pipes at home.
