Lets say you chamber a short action 6.5 cartridge in a long action receiver so that you can later rechamber it to a long action 6.5 cartridge when the barrel wears out. I understand that it is the throat that wears out first but perhaps there is other wear as well. Will going from lets say a 6.5x47 to a 6.5x270 start barrel life over again or at least partially?

If this make any sense what cartridges are the best matchups for this startegy in terms of barrel cleanup.

6.5 Lapua to eventually become 6.5-06 or 6.5x270
6.5 Creedmore to 6.5-06 or 6.5x270
6.5 Remington to 6.5-06 or 6.5x270

I can see your rational here, and I'm sure there are some people out there who have done it but, "some" smiths are reluctant to take their chambering reamer to a barrel that has been shot a lot already. On top of that, the money it would cost you for the rechamber will not be well spent because the rechamber will be shot out a lot quicker than the original chambering. Firecracking accompanies throat wear in the barrel and this is why the rechamber will be short lived, especially with a 6.5-06. You would be better served just to get a new barrel and start new again or chamber it with the 6.5-06 from the start. Just my .02!

I have done this with smaller chambers, but only after taking 2" off the bbl, say a 22-250, 28" bbl cut to 25", 1 off the muzzel and 2 off the chamber end then rechamber to 222/223/221 and the results have been very good on the re work, however the smaller chambers burn less powder and thus errode slower the exisingn problems.

i have an number done this way and most shoot in the .3's vs original .2's

They cut an inch off the front to put a new crown on the barrel. A good crown is paramount for accuracy!

I understand a crown is important but an inch to make a new crown? I would think you would only have to go as far as it take for the metal to clean up.

Maybe the best strategy is to start with the shortest of the short action cartridges for a barrel that will eventually become 6.5/270?

You asked "Oh, why is any coming off of the front end?" I was refering back to bheadboy's post where he said he would take 1" off the muzzle end and this was for the crown. No where did "I" state it was "necessary" to take a whole inch off of the muzzle to clean up the crown! To each there own so who are we to say how much is necessary? I didn't pay for the barrel so it really doesn't concern me! Personally, the minimal the amount taken off the better! Thats me though!

I hope someone can tell me how much is necessary, I would guess on the front end just enough to clean up the metal but maybe there is something I am not thinking off, On the back end I would think to get beyond any damage to the metal. It concerns me because it would be my barrel.

I am just looking for the best information I can get.

Awhile back I had a 6.5/06 AI in a 30 in 1 in 8 Hart that was a screamer. At about 800 rounds it started to fade. I re-crowned, no luck. cut 2 in off and re-chambered with same reamer. 100 test rounds and several Hundred $ later. I tossed it. Go with a new barrel. cry one time....

There is more to barrel death than throat damage. A carbon restriction further down the barrel will ultimately kill it's potential. So all barrels die..
I'm sure you can greatly extend use of your barrel, with your plan. But you've got to stay on top of that carbon to get ~10,000 rounds of accuracy in the end.
