Does MagnetoSpeed work with 223’s

Tired of the light based chronographs, so was thinking of the MagnetoSpeed unit. I thought I had read that they will not read .223’s. As that is mostly what I shoot, I thought I would check and see how others have made out before buying one. Thanks in advance.

Sporter here. Catches my little .17 caliber 20-grain bullets at over 4,100 fps without a miss. Works fine with all my rifles from .17 to .30 caliber and has no problems with the brake on my .223 either.

I had the expensive v3 and sold it. I later bought the cheap version sporter for 168 at cableas. works the same for barrels 1/2 in up to 1 in. You can buy a little adapter to hook it up to smart phone app to save data. fyi. Worked flawless for me on 20-22 cal fast bullets. and on 22lr. You could probably make it work on fat barrels if you bought some extra plastic shims.

Sporter works fine...but I do want a look at the European radar that F-class John is playing with.

Since you have had both of them, is there some sort of difference between the units other than the ability to fit larger barrels? Just wondering, as it is quite a price difference. Is there some sort of resolution difference? Does the phone app thing work well, if you know.

Thanks so much.

Mine only worked sometimes. If the barrel was .900 at muzzle, not so much. The .750/800 barrel at muzzle did ok.

About all of my varmint rigs are 1” or so at the muzzle. I just had to adjust sensitivity on them. It read the 17 and 20’s with large OD barrels.

They work fine on .223. I use mine on that and down to 22LR. Barrel size does not matter as you can attach them to suppressors but it has to be installed correctly to pick up the bullet. It's a pretty easy process.

I had an issue with using it on a bull barrel that was 1.250" diameter. The thinnest shim supplied with the kit was still to thick and the bore was too far away to detect the bullet. So I took that shim out and folded a dollar bill as a shim to bring it closer to the bullet path and it worked fine after that...

Wherever you read that, you need to quit reading.
