Does a VLD head deeply seated into a case, always reduce accuracy ?

Hi,

Friend of mine is shooting 6mm Creedmore because he does not have to deepseat VLD heads to feed from his AR magazine. Does this lack of protrusion of the bullet into the case volume, really give better accuracy than deepseating the same bullet into the longer 243 Winchester case that will then also feed from the magazine, and if so, why ?

Gee,

The following quotes are from well respected shooters.

We want to keep the bullet above the case body to shoulder junction, if it’s lower we lose velocity through reducing powder capacity. There is also a `feeling' that some of these long bullets don't group well when seated over-deep. (Countering this, exceptionally long 140gn match bullets often produce bug-hole groups when so loaded in the .308W based .260 Remington for magazine operation.)

Everyone I know does it because for example a 139 Scenar would have to be seated at about 2.90" or 2.91" to not have the bottom of the bearing surface at or past the neck junction. Lapua factory ammo, even in .338 Lapua, does this. I wouldn't worry about it.

A bad thing about seating through the neck shoulder junction is the tension variance that results. You cannot really control bullet grip at the junction (which could also change with each body sizing). The neck shoulder junction is thicker and stronger than the rest of the neck. Depending on your chamber you might also run out of clearance there creating a dangerous loaded condition.
