does a F class stock have to be flat at the rear?

hey guys, wanting to upgrade my savage 260 b c medalist to a 3 inch wide forearm stock for f class. my question is does it NEED a flat rear or is a sloped rear ok. what are the pros to a flat rear? what are the top stocks i need to look at for a savage 10 short action 4.4 spacing.(want rifle to weigh 18 to 20 lbs) thanks

I'm no expert, but I think the default answer is "yes." But I'd like a stock with a very slight angle in the butt that I could use to make minor elevation adjustments. Maybe that's a bad idea for some reason, but I don't have a fancy stick shift front rest and that would make adjustments in elevation easier.

A number of my F Class buddys are shooting Savage M12 F/TR .308s. Some have modified the bottom rear of the stock by installing an L-shaped section of polished 1/4 inch drill rod to produce a flat bottom. Others are shooting the same rifle with the factory sloped bottom. All do equally well at 1000 yds on the 1/2 minute inner ring. I have never seen any difference in their scores.

Guess it depends on your particular equipment combo and the confidence you have in your rig. If you think your combo is going to shoot well, it probably will.

Both my F(Open) rifles have old Fajen prone stocks with sloped bottoms and Harris bipods. On a good day I can compete with the other shooters using flat bottomed stocks mounted on pedestals with 29 adjustments. I think it is mainly because it never occured to me that I couldn`t compete.

In much the same way, if some of the F(O) shooters couldn`t use their favourite pedestal with 7 levers sticking out of it, they might not shoot well because in their minds they don`t think they can compete with a lesser pedestal.

Both of the guns I use to shoot F-class have a flat rear that is parallel to the fore-end. On the plus side, that helps the gun to recoil straight back, especially when used with a rear bag that also does not have a slope. The downside is that basically all elevation is controlled by the rest; hence one reason for the popularity of joystick rests.

I looked at stockades long range F class style stock with the flat rear, that would be exactly what i am looking for if the rear were sloped. I will call stockade and see if thats possible to do. thanks

Short range BR shooters all use stocks sloped to the toe. They seem to do just fine. F-Open guys have no problem as the front rest can provide elevation adjustment. F-TR shooters need some way to adjust and a sloped rear is very convenient. My F-TR Savage has a parallel rear, so I use a board under the bipod that I slightly tilt away from me. It provides the minor adjustment I need.

There does not seem to be an advantage either way.

just had chance to shoot a mcmillian benchrest stock (wide front forearm and sloped rear with palm swell).
it felt very good to me but i was on a bench, is a stock such as this a disadvantage in F class?

It depends upon your shooting style. Some folks prefer a more vertical grip, like the McMillan Tooley MBR. If you shoot relatively free recoil in F-Open, a regular benchrest stock will likely work well. Even on my F-TR rifle, I do not grip the pistol grip very hard. My recent efforts have been to adjust my position so that the rifle recoils straight back with little or no muzzle displacement. This only matters when using a bipod. It is a non-issue for F-Open with a rest.

problem solved, talked to kevin at stockade and he is going to make the rear sloped on his long range benchrest stock for me. that will be just what i was looking for, vertical grip, flat 3 inch forearm and sloped rear. thanks guys for your input.
