Does a 7mm-08 need a magnum primer? Solve my mystery?

Shot my new Tikka 7mm-08 today. Loaded up some new Remington brass, Remington large rifle primers, RL 17, 154 grain Hornady Interbond, etc. About one out of four cartridges would not shoot. Any idea? I reload alot and this is a surprise to me.

As a side note...I thought this caliber was not supposed to kick. It felt more than my 30.06 to me. No where near my .243.

By "will not shoot" do you mean not at all, or not where you want it to go? I use large rifle primers in mine all the time, and it goes off every time. I use,
lapua brass
Winchester large rifle primers
H4350
150 smk's or 162 Amax's

in my one 7-08 , I use norma brass , CCI 200 primer , RL 17 . I've used both 140 grain and 168 grain bullets . I've never had a problem .

Reload my 7mm-08 Rem M700 CDL hunting rifle with Rem & Win cases and Rem 9 1/2 or WLR primers and never fails to go bang when I pull the trigger. Sub 1moa rifle when I do my part.

If they don't shoot there's something wrong. Assuming you mean "BANG" and are not dealing with an accuracy issue, there's trouble.

Primers struck properly?

Any sign of primers backing out on those going off to indicate headspace issues/brass or chamber?

Bad primers?

Flash holes closed?

Bad powder?

You said the gun was new. If the components are fine, look at the headspace, firing pin protrusion. There's something wrong.

of the millions of primers and tons of powder, seldom isthe problem component.

i use 9 1/2, cci, Win, all in ww and rp brass, 4 different chambers.
never a failure,

check the flash hole for bur,
check the indentation on the unfired primers
check headspace
are cases over sized (shortened alowing them to float forward on pin impact)
prime a number of fired cases un sized - chamber and see if primer will fire.

Great replies...thank you.

All of the unfired cases had decent primer hits except one was light. I reshot that again, got a bigger dent, and still would not fire off the bullet.

I had my gunsmith put a large rifle magazine and do some work on the bolt stop so I could shoot my bullets longer. I'm going to see him today. He said it could be bad primers (although I never had this happen and I have shot thousands and thousands), shoulder off from the resizing die, or something with the bolt.

PS The trigger is amazing in the T3 but I would not recommend one to anyone in a caliber that kicks. The gun is light as a feather.

Someone said they shoot Laupua brass. That is was I use in my guns but I could not find any for the 7mm-08?

Buy some 308 Lapua and run it through a 7mm-08 FL die - you will love it.

Another option is to buy Lapua 260 and run it through expander mandrel.

Curious. Report what you find.

Oh - we all forgot to answer your main topic question. NO. You do NOT need magnum primers in any 308 case configuration.
