Do you think you are to old to shoot competition, well your not! READ!

Do you think you are too old to shoot in competition, your not!

If you are over 60 you may do better then those 40 years younger, most all your record holders are over 50 and many over 60 like Bill Shehane comes to mind, but being 64 at the moment I can’t come up with other names right now , memory loss sometimes short term sometimes long but we all have it and its no big deal in shooting as long as you can find your way home, hee hee.
But what us older folks have that a young man may not is the ability to concentrate 100% on what we might be doing, I just started rifle comp about a year or so ago, I was shooting pistol USPSA where age sucks ( did win one state match in open) and do to some medical issues I have stopped and started rifle, I have not shot a rifle since late 60 in the military and was introduced to a M14, I did well being the only one in my squad to achieve a SAEMR ribbon, after military 1970 never shot again until last year.

After dropping USPSA I had to find some kind of rifle to shoot, I must shoot, if I can’t shoot then just go ahead and put me down, so I searched the internet to find what can I do, my local club I shot pistol at shoots CMP I think its called well I could never shoot military or all the positions as I did in my younger years, then I came across F- Class that was invented by a over 60 guy for over 60 guys, but didn’t want to spend $1000 for a gun, so I read about 100 and 200 yard Varmint where you sit on a bench and you can use any power scope, now you’re talking my language, so I found a club 30 miles away that shot that I called them, and found I could just go get a out of box varmint size barrel gun, I bought a Save 10FP in a .223 being a reloader for a million years and a lot of brass around, I then started shooting 200 yard varmint, I was always in the top four out of 20 shooters.

I told some folks I worked with who all have Master degrees and PHDs in mental health, about how I could out shoot a bunch of young men, how could that be, I have not shot in over 40 years and the young guys in USPSA I could not keep up with, well in USPSA there is a lot of physical movement and very fast thought process to shoot well, its all about FAST, in rifle you have 15 minutes for 5 shot target for score and any sighters you want, well that is a piece of cake after running and shooting 20 targets and 40 rounds some moving and flopping and doing that in 19 seconds, young guys in 12 and 10, and faster, hard to believe how fast some of those guys are , how about from a holster draw two steel targets 10 yards 3 shots in .92 of a second, not even one second I saw guys do that, my best 1.76 of a second, anyway they said as you get older you are more relaxed, good point, and you can concentrate at a much higher level then a young man, WHY? Simple your house may be paid for your kids are grown , you don’t have to go to work tomorrow and your stress level is low, you are relaxed and laid back the only thing on your mind is that target, and all of that is what it takes to shoot rifle, concentration and being relaxed is a good start.

And the people will help you to get the right equipment, good rest front and rear and you may want to move up to a better gun if you like it, I guarantee you will be hooked like me, shooting since I retired in 2001 is my hobby it is also a social event, I have known many of guys I worked with who sat around doing nothing , there all dead, so go get a gun and rear bag and cheap Caldwell junior rest 50bucks and go shoot and meet some good folks and have a blast.

Frank,
You mentioned F-Class...well Team Berger one of the best Teams in Open F-Class are all Senior citizens (over 60) and 2/3 of the team of 6 are Grand Seniors (over 70). On any given day anyone of them can beat the best in the world.

Yes that was one I couldnt remember the man who is owner of berger bullets is over 70, Yes, Thanks for that.

Over the winter i shoot with some pretty old guys, the oldest is a 89 year old ex sniper that served in Korea. One of the others is a little younger but shoots a 7mm STW with a light hunting barrel and no break, its like a cannon. And this all during a MN winter, we will spend 10 hours shooting in 10 degree weather.

Im really hoping the 2nd ammendment holds up untill im that age becaue i cant see anything that will keep me from getting out and having fun.

What an enlightening story as I am turning 54 this year and have health issues but love to punch paper. I guess my excuses are all gone and it is time to start competing.I have been nervous about actually starting to do this, its like I need a teacher.I know an up &coming shooter and I am going to sit down and pick his brain on how the matches are run and how many rounds you will be firing etc. Thanks for the thread,it is inspiring. I,m only a young kid at 41 but I have seen a lot of older shooters do very well at F Class in Australia. Like you said, it is the retired shooters who often do well, taking out lots of prizes. While us young family men had to drive for 12 hours, unload, shoot and race home for work, the big group of retired grey nomads arrived a few days early, set up camp, checked out the range and caught up with freinds. After the shoot, they had 1-2 weeks to drive to the next shoot.
I read about a 100 year old shooter shooting a possible about 2 years back and regularly see shooters in their 80s.

Something else to mention is that women do just as well as men and often win the big shoots.

I shot over the years but mostly hunting and as I got older hunting wasn't as exciting as it was but I still love to shoot. (I don't call shooting PD's hunting it falls in the relaxed shooting venue)

My first competition was XTC and it wore me out but it was fun and I also knew it wasn't to be something I'd fall in love with. Still the love to shoot prevailed and I continued to explore different rifles, bolt guns, .223, .220's, .243's well its gone full circle, I'm back to the AR platform .223 but no doubt in my mind it'll be on a bench.
That's fun.
I was always amazed though at about every match was listening to the excuses for the dropped shot. Loved it, Hilarious, My favorite is the 600yd MR match off a rest /prone. easier on the bod. The coat and sling thing about killed me.

I just turned 64 and its a lot easier to sit at a bench and relax and shoot than it ever was going to work everyday :D

cr500, I like the part about the ol guys showing up in their campers, how true , some have big dam buses, motor homes, and make a two week journy of it, you got the picture buddy.

TnTom
Like you I will be 64 in June, on the bench is the way to go, I tried prone but getting up I looked like a beached walrus trying to get back in the water floppin around on the ground waiting to be harpooned, well maybe not that bad but it did'nt look good that's for sure.

I am young(just 25) and very new to this long range shooting and reloading. I grew up with guns but mostly trap shooting, we would go out to the rifle range a couple times a year but it was a longer drive and got pricey to shoot $18 for a box of ammo only at 100 yards, i did more black powder than center fire.

I have been shooting very well but my new 260AI has made things simple compared to the 223 i learned on. Ive been shooting Fclass for the first time this spring and ive been shooting in the low 190s, i even got third place out of 25 in the unclassified/marksman the first time i ever shot 600yards and in my first NRA match.

I have to say the biggest thing to help me out is all of my time behind a bow. I know its a lot different but after shooting thousands of arrows a year you learn that technique is everything. And there are no rests or benches or bags with a bow so you need to rely on how you hold your bow and anchor points. I just think too many younger people try to blame equipment because they dont know any better so they just figure it couldnt have been them.

Frank,
I remember a thread a year or so ago where you ask something like how old is to old to compete and a bunch of us said your never to old, I think maybe your to old when you can no longer get into your wheel chair ;D I am glad you took the bull by the horns ad I am equally glad your doing quite well, I hope you have a stellar year my friend :)
Sincerely Wayne.

Rock Knocker, good job.

bozo699, I don't remember that but I am sure you are right, I can't tell you what I had for lunch, but man your right I seen some ol guys look like they were gonna fall off the bench.
Thanks Wayne

I shoot F Class with a grand gentleman who lives north of Montreal, QC and spent his life shooting with the Canadian Military all over the world. A wealth of knowledge and experience and a joy to be on the line with, he emailed me last week and we'll be attending a F Class match this month, oh yeah...I think he turned 83 this year.

Actually, there are some advantages to being older such as Medicare which will pay to upgrade your eyes to 16 year old standards if you have cataracts. I have found that it really helps if I can see the target.

I will be 66 next month and in 2007 I had my left shoulder rebuilt so I could continue using a sling. In 2010 I had vertebrae and neck injections so I could actually get into prone. (and then get up) This year I had my right knee replaced so I could walk down to the targets without pain. I guess you can say I am not a quitter, although my scores aren't so hot. I lived for 35 years with back pain but now it is gone. I have also had bones removed from both thumbs and my right wrist. Life is good!

Holy Sh** ! JohnO

Fummy you brought all that up just had surgery at 7AM on my foot couldnt walk 100 yards , pain at the moment sucks but hopefully I can make the next match on the 22nd, I don't think you can be over 60 with out several surgery's unfortunately, but we all keep hanging on, I hope your doing well now John and good luck to you buddy.
