Do Prairie Dogs Come Out When it is Raining?

Got caught several miles away from even dirt road once while PD shooting in WY. The rain came quickly and got very heavy. After spending almost an hour, we found he way we drove in was impassable going out. Rain washed out a culvert. We had to turn around and find another way out. The guide tried a couple ways out before we finally found the gravel road again. His big Ram V-10 3/4 Ton 4WD was screaming at times just to keep us moving. We threw a rooster-tail at least 20 feet high in places and, once, I saw the tach hit max RPM with the speedometer reading under 10 MPH.
Didn't see any PD as long as it was raining but when the rain slacked up to a drizzle they started to reappear. May have been just to watch our fun. Don't know how he ever got all that mud off the truck!

They dont mind snow I can tell you that - had a 1 day opportunity around Cody a couple years ago and it started at 19deg and 10inches of snow (labor day weekend)...got into the high 30s and sunny if i recall correctly...still managed to kill 40+ dogs in half a day ;)

I've seen them out not far from Sheridan with snow on the ground too.

Occasionally, when the rodents (prairie dogs), excavate and burrow into coal bearing strata these rodents are of a darker shade than other burrowing rodents. They are not mining coal. My guess is, constant nibbling on vegetation, occasionally having dew, supplies the rodent's water requirements. I have seen these rodents engage in cannibalism, possibly encouraged by a need to obtain fluids which in this case would be blood from their own kind. Rain seems to diminish activity somewhat.
