Do Not Shoot the Donor

I heard this advice but I thought well what the heck, it wont cost me much to get brass and dies and I already had good bullets. Bought a lightly used Rem SPS varmint in 22-250 Rem. My plan was to go along and probably build an F Class rifle out of it, Probably on 6.5x284 or maybe 284. Tried shooting the rifle and surprisingly, the darned thing shoots pretty good. There are a couple detractors. The barrel is pretty rough and it builds copper. The other is that is a 14 twist. But it pains me to take a good shooting gun down. I think I will keep it as is and use it for varmints for a while first.

Strut ,if you live near a dicks sporting goods, they have been selling them new for 449.99 with a factory 50.00 rebate .They come in 3 or 4 calibers and they are the sps models.I wouldnt hesitate tearing one of those down as it can be replaced fairly easy. Now if it were made in 1967 and it looked in nice condition,I wouldnt do it as they are becoming collector interest type firearms.I hope this helps you make up your mind or you could buy a savage and join the rest of us having a riot building these things for cheap.

That`s why you should never shoot a barrel when you buy a gun for the action. ;) I bought a 722 Rem 20 years ago now only it was chambered in a wildcat and 25 cal. It turned out to be on the 221 Fireball case. I went to the trouble of finding dies and loading some ammo for it, It`s still in the valut and still the same chamber. :-[
