Send them along. I can always use something to open paint cans...I don’t use my wood chisels much Mabie I could let you use one
Before shaping and sanding the blank was about 2 5/8" or 2-3/4" thick I can't recall exactly. I can measure the other unshapped blank when I get home this evening.I'm currently trying to find someone with a planer to smooth out my hunk of wood. Additionally I'll be running to the lumber yard to buy some planks of something as after a little measuring it looks like the piece of wood I have is not quite thick enough. I'm going to look for something that will look good with the walnut. I'm curious to see what I come up with.

@CStuck what is the width on your forend?
Geez —thought you were going to make a stock with a chisel and a hammer. Anyway just send me 100 bucks for shipping and I’ll get that chisel right out to youI'm currently trying to find someone with a planer to smooth out my hunk of wood. Yep. The plan is to get a couple of pieces an laminate them together to get the appropriate thickness. The original piece will become the center.Hey Bully: You can use a piece that’s thinner for the center of a blank. I have some wood that only gives me 1 3/4” thickness after it goes through the planer. I just make the butt a little thinner than my normal 2”. To widen the forend, I glue pieces to the sides of it. 1/2”, 3/4”, whatever it takes to get the width I need.
You can use routers, chisels and gouges, hatchets. Heck, I don’t care if you train a Beaver to gnaw on it for ya. As long as you’re having fun and you get a stock in the end.![]()
Uh ohIf you’re like me, it becomes all consuming. When I start one, I’m at it until it’s finished. I’ll spend every waking minute in my shop. My wife hates it. She says I “just disappear “.
I got a hold of some paulonia to try a few ultra light benchrest stocks. I’ll be using carbon fiber on those. I searched some info and found a guy making skateboards with it. He was using the cloth and West Systems epoxy. I’ve used that epoxy with fiberglass, before. It’s good stuff and I have a bunch in my shop. That’s what I’ll be using.
About the beaver or the projectNope! Not even close!![]()
Are you skimming it with the CF? I am looking to sandwich it between the wood.I’ll be using carbon fiber on those. I searched some info and found a guy making skateboards with it. Hey did you see the wood/AL stock in the bulletinNope! Not even close!![]()
Ok I’ll have to take care of the Beaver. The project, of course. I already have three dogs. I have no room for a Beaver!
Thanks for the heads up. I just looked. Pretty neat. I have a design that’s a bit different. I just need some time.![]()
