Do I need another scope?

I have shot several premium scopes at 600 yards over the last several years. I have shot three quite a lot. They are the 10-50X Kahles, the 10-50X Sightron, The 12-60X Golden Eagle and the 36X Valdada. All of these are great scopes, but I cannot see bullet holes at 600 yards with any of these. It may have something to do with my 75 year old eyes. I have seen bullet holes with the 15-55X NF Competition on occasion, but I don't own one of those scopes. Is there a reasonably priced scope with which one can see 6mm holes (at least those in the white) at 600 yards? I have also tested Nightforce and March premium scopes..

I have requested the new 5x-50X Trijicon and the 5X-50X Delta Stryker. I don't know if either company will loan me one of these, but if they do I will report my findings here. Good shooting...James MockDSCF2011 (2).JPG ivinv6.jpg NF test 001.JPG

Just a guess but I'd say it's eyeballs. Have you had your cataracts removed?
I can see holes in dayglo chartreuse poster paper at 500 meters with a 5x22 NXS.

Seeing the bullet holes has more to do with how the sun is hitting the target. There are a few other variables too, like is it a black background, is your scope PROPERLY set for your eyes and properly set up to get rid of Parallax at that distance. The worst hindrance is heat waves! There is one variable many people do not know about and thankfully is not a common problem much anymore. It is called "lash". Lash is where your scope is crystal clear at a certain distance BUT it still has parallax. Once you get rid of the parallax the scope is slightly out of focus. Getting them BOTH TOGETHER used to be a chore for scope manufacturers.. Thankfully, this situation is not common anymore.

Just buy a target cam. I did. I got tired of trying. I have the Golden Eagle and the Sightron 10-50. With perfect lighting on white paper, I can see most 30 cal holes but not all and I’m 62. I’m talking about 500 meters.

I was under the impression that the Delta and Trijicon are pretty much the same scope with some upgrades on the features on the Trijicon. I would be VERY interested in a review of the two. I have came very close to pulling the trigger on the Trijicon because Midway has it on sale right now for 10% off, which is a little more than $1700.

James, we did a test a few years back with a number of scopes: Nightforce, Sightron, Leupold, Swarovski, Zeiss.

Among other things, we tried to see 6mm Bullet holes at 600 yards on an NBRSA target.

In PERFECT conditions (early morning, no mirage, no wind, sun just over the berm enough to illuminate the target), I could see bullet holes with 3 of 5 scopes, but with one I was just seeing a darker blur, and my "calls" were confirmed with a friend looking through a 60X Swaro 80mm spotting scope with superb glass.

A 30-year-old shooter with good eyes could see holes pretty clearly with 4 of the 5 scopes.

90 minutes later, I could only see bullet holes with 1 of the 5 scopes, and even our "young eagle eye" could only see the holes with 2 of 5 scopes.

Two conclusions:

1. Vision quality makes a difference.
2. Conditions need to be very, very good. With any kind of moisture in the air or mirage, forget it.

On a perfect day at the break of dawn, I have seen 6mm bullet holes clearly at 1000 yards with a Pentax Spotting scope. 2 hours later I could not see 30 cal holes with the same optic.

Final thought: Even with the very best scope ($3000+) an older set of eyes will have trouble seeing 6mm bullet holes clearly at 600. For practice days, put the money into a TargetVision system. You'll be able to see all shots clearly on your mobile device.

Here ya go!
Not trying to be a smart a$$ but at 75?
I have a TargetCam which does a great job but at some point you have to go down range and tape/replace targets. I just ordered a ShotMarker which I'm pumped for trying.

I tried several different RF transmitters to get a targeting system going over the last 5 years with varying problems, mostly range on the transmitter through the wooded lane going back to my 500 yard target. Now I find all I have to do is mount my android cell phone on a tripod, point the camera at the target, turn on video chat and call my wife's phone. I then watch my bullets hit the target from the bench on my wife's phone. Works at any distance!

Here is probably the best camera system out there. Shoot and watch from your iPad. Good to a mile or more.
