DIY camo jobs - rifle chassis

garandman

Bolt Gun Bodacious
Building a bolt gun in 2 2 4 Valkyrie and got the barreled action done in flat dark Earth

Thinking about how to paint the chassis

my cerakote guy said it would be $300 for him to paint it.

Anyone do a DIY multi Cam type camo job? Any tips or Web links? Pics for inspiration Thanks

It's all about the cost of labor I think.

My googling seems to suggest It's all about vinyl stickers applied to the surface that then you spray paint over to create the color blobs.

With paint , stickers and a cheap spray gun I'll probably spend half as much as just having the work done. But it's fun to do it myself to

Depending on your abilities, I use cerakote C (airdry). You buy the 4oz testers from them or eBay. You don’t need much to paint a gun. Works great and honestly, so durable you won’t notice a lot of difference from their bake on h series. Then I get my vinyl stencils off ebay. They sell all different camo patterns for cerakote. And they work really well. You can use a airbrush to apply or you can use the fill up spray paint cans from Home Depot to apply. If you google cerakote patterns, you will get all kinds of ideas and colors, and patterns. I really enjoy doing my own paint jobs. Let me know if you need help to know how to do the layering.

If you are comfortable with a spray gun, you'll do great with cerakote. It's pretty forgiving and sprays acceptably well out of air brushes or cheap spray gear. Siphon guns will waste a heck of a lot though so definitely get a gravity feed. It's harder to mix the appropriate amount of hardener repeatedly than it is to spray in my opinion. The amount of hardener changes gloss.
Cleanliness is really important. If it won't pass a water break test, it needs to be cleaned and degreased again. I've always blasted with fine aluminum oxide before spraying. Even the abrasives need to be particularly clean. Use a dryer on your air line.
You can cure in a cheap propane cabinet smoker, your wife's oven etc. I've even used one of my old bluing tanks to cure a particularly long barreled action. Worked fine.

Im open to ideas, but know nothing about hydrodip.

Do a search on here for hydrodip. You can do it yourself with a kit from ebay. Degrease, spray a primer coat and then dip. Follow up with flat or clear clear coat. Best to do some practice runs before the real thing. Youtube videos will help learn the process.
Here's a smokeless muzzleloader DIY job in tree bark snow camo.

I've done a few Cerakote pattern jobs and some are a little harder/ more time consuming than others. It takes time and proper prep and that's where the cost comes in. Actually doing it is the easy part. These were all done with stencil kits from freedom stencils. The hardest of these to do was the digital camo, there are just so many stencils and multi-cam would be similar.
