Distance from lands to start out?

Don't assume that a long jump to the rifling is not going to be accurate.
I have 300winmag load with 130 gr TTSX that jumps them 1/4" and it's the most accurate load in that barrel.

I took two new rifles to the range with FEDERAL GMM, both rifles were chambered to 300 Winchester Magnum, with a few adjustments the Weatherby shot one hole groups, the Winchester Model 70 shot like a shot gun, it shot patterns. That was over 10 years ago. I asked Winchester to make me a set of dies for their chamber or install a chamber in their rifle that would match my dies.

I personally start doing load development with a slight jam, so that I can understand what my maximum charge is. That way, if my chamber likes a jam, I don't have to worry that it may be over pressured. If you start with any jump, then jam the bullet for a seating depth test, you know you're within pressure range. That's just me though, I always try to run below max pressure.

In a hunting rifle, jump the bullets. Start at 10 thou off and work back. If it’s a factory barrel and chamber with potentially a generous freebore you may have to live with a fair jump. Make sure there is enough bullet in the neck too, don’t want them coming apart in the field from a bit of rough transport.
