distance for working up loads

I am working up loads for my new 6BR. I was just wanting some advice on what range i should be shooting while testing my loads. I will be shooting from 200-800 yds once I have found the right load for my rifle. I guess it would be a safe assumption that if you find a great load for 100 yds, it should be a good long range load too????

I use 100 meters for just the initial stages of load development, progressing to 200 meters for final fine tuning. Once the load is shooting a one hole group at 200 meters, I move to 300, 400, and 500 meters for click development. You really have to shoot at the bench the distances you intend to shoot in the field.

I recently had a .243AI built for the sole purpose of getting into the 1000yd. club of the VHA. Currently I have it shooting just under 3/4" @ 300yds. My question is, since the longest range I have access to is 450 yds. If my particular load is still shooting well at that range can I expect it to continue to shoot well to 1000yds. I'm shooting an 87Gr. V-Max at a M.V. of 3210fps.

Chuckhunter,
That is phenomenol accuracy; more details are needed. I have a .243 A.I. 10 twist that I'm shooting 87 grn. V-Maxes in as well but I'm not getting that kind of accuracy at 300 meters. Bear in mind this barrel has over 1600 hot rounds through it and can still accurately slay groundhogs but will only group approx. 1 3/8" @ 300 meters. What load are you using?

Chino69, The load, I'm currently shooting is 44.5Gr's. of N-160 with the 87 V-Max's seated .020 into the rifeling. I'm getting E.S.'s in the 13 to 15 fps range with a S.D. of 5. The rig is a Hart straight taper 1-9 twist barrel fluted, finished of at 27 inches. It's on a Wichita Action in an old,I believe McMillen) stock. with an old Canjar three lever trigger set at 6oz's. topped with a 6.5 X 20 Zeiss Conquest scope. Oh yeah, I'm shooting Russian primers KVB-7's. Here's a pic of the rig.

galold, There is no substitute for shooting at the exact range for confirming performance, but most likely if you are that accurate at 300 and your bullet is still supersonic and there is no wind, you should do well at 1000 yards. The wind and ability to read it and compensate for it is so important for accurate shooting at long range. Most of us have to shoot at whatever distance we have available to develop loads. If you are punching paper, then go and hope for the best when you get the opportunity to shoot at the longer range. Good luck. Ken
