dirty case neck cleaning

I found a load that groups excellent with good velocity, only problem is the cases have dirty necks. do I need to loosen neck tension? turn necks a little thinner? this residue is hard to clean off.

Any suggestions.....

If the load's shooting well, I wouldn't change the mechanics of the round.

I use a little piece of Scotch-Bright,fine steel wool would work also, but figure the synthetic SB won't embed small fibers in my case necks). A single twist or two usually cleans them right up.

For "pdog quantities" of cases, I just toss them in the tumbler with corncob media with a touch of liquid Flitz and go do something else for 2-3 hours.

I clean my cases in Isso case cleaner. I cleans inside & out. works great on the inside of necks.

A bit of Never Dull wadding works wonders!

A twist or two and wipe dry.

Thanks for the input guys, sounds like this dirty neck thing is quite common. I'll clean up some brass tonight!

Some powders just seem to cause the neck to get carbon fouling more than others. Also, some guns seem to be more prone to neck fouling more than others. Ball powder seems cleaner to the necks than stick powder.

I do not have an answer as to why, other than it seems to me to be a function of how fast the case neck expands to seal the chamber at the front of the case.

One thing I do know is that if the pressure is really low, the carbon will extend all the way back down the case body as the case does not expand to seal the chamber.

I have just quit worrying about it and cuss it then clean the necks when I tumble the cases.

Carbon on the necks is a normal situation, caused by some gas flowing back over the neck in the instant before it seals against the chamber wall.

My favorite removal method is a Krazy Kloth from Bruno's or Sinclair. Steel wool, Never Dull, even Hoppe's on a patch will do in a pinch. That carbon is very hard,not just hard to remove) and will scratch the heck out of your dies or bushings if not removed.
