Dirty Barrel - New Gun?

Some time ago, I bought a new Howa 223 barreled action from a distributor of these on Gunbroker. I decided to run a patch of BoreTech Eliminator down the bore just to clean out anything dirt, preservative, etc., that might be in the bore. To my surprise, the patch was dark and did have green despite using a nickel plated Tipton jag. My first thought was that the barreled action was used. But every indication, other than the barrel seems to say "no". No wear anywhere else on the gun that I can see. I did have it at a gunsmith for bedding, but doubt it was fired. Test shots at the factory? Or...?

Phil,

Manufacturers `proof test` each rifle with a few blue pill loads, then function test & fire rounds from the magazine (if equipped) before being "passed" for shipment. (Remington plant video)

I`ve never seen a clean rifle barrel from the factory be it Remington, Savage, or Winchester.

It would be interesting to get an insiders viewpoint on this.

Regards,

Scott

My "New" Remington was pretty dirty from the factory. Looked like it had been tested, then it sat dirty for a couple of months.

I too concur that barrels should be carefully cleaned prior to break in if you believe in it. I clean mine with alittle iosso bore paste but first I use a good powder solvent to get things loosened up.I brush with a tight fitting nylon brush.

Excellent! An opportunity for yet another thirty-five page discussion of how or whether to break in a barrel. ;)

Every single brand new rifle or handgun I have ever bought was dirty from factory test firing.

Never know with a used firearm. Depends on if the person selling it wants to be courteous to their buyer.

Either way, a good rule of thumb is to always clean any firearm you purchase before firing it; new or used/clean or not.

I bought a NEW rifle once & to my surprise it had copper fouling,
after making inquiry I was shown other NEW rifle bores
if you look down the barrel of any new firearm & you will see green

Hopefully you ran enough patches with Boretec Eliminator to completely clean the bore out. ;-)

I've gotten blue (and other colors too) when Boretec is used after other "cleaners". It really does a great job! WD

Always clean a new barrel after installing.

The proceed with the break-in procedures.
