dimension difference go-no go ?

What is the typical variance between the lengths of a "go" and "no-go" gauge? And are "field" gauges typically half way between those?

I'm mostly interested in middle weight cartridges .308, 22-250, hunting applications

Basically how much space is allowable for ease of bolt closure?

I asked that question a few months ago and never got a real good answer. But I can tell you that the last time I screwed a barrel on a Savage action, the bolt wouldn't close with one layer of Scotch Magic Tape on the back of the go-gauge. And IIRC, that made the go-gauge .002" longer.

The difference between a GO and NO-GO gauge can vary from around .004 on bench rest calibers to .006-.008 on some of other calibers.

I just measured a new set of PT&G 243 go/no go gauges. there was .006 difference between the two.

Depending on caliber, .004 to .006 is the difference. The field guage is more. It is usually best to use guages from the same manufacturer as well.

If you follow SAAMI the difference is .0035". You should never mix two different manufactures gauges.

SAAMI requires a gunsmith/manufacture to use steel gauges. Both a go and a no go.

The only two liability insurance companys for gunsmiths/gun manufacdtures specifies in their policy, that all chambers be cut to SAAMI specs.

field gauge tells you that your rifle chamber has an excessive amount of headspace and should be repaired . if this gauge goes take the rifle out of service . T.R.

Thanks for all the info. I got totally thrown off by a 280AI, now I'm sticking with a straight 260 set at .002 over my go gauge.
