Dillon Spring Verses Mechanical Return

I purchased a used 550 and it had springs on the charge bar. Question is, do you prefer the spring or the mechanical retrun rod and why?

I put a rubber band around the powder container and charge bar screw to assist.
Seems to work good for me

The springs were the first generation of improvement over basically no spring return which proved to be unreliable and lead to differing charge weights in the loads. The mechanical system is the 2nd generation of change to the charging system. I myself prefer the spring type charging system to the newer mechanical slap type system currently in use. I have 5 complete caliber change setups all with spring chargers. I believe the mechanical slap system is no better the the spring return system.

I have a 550B and also prefer the coil springs on the powder measure. Better consistency in my experience

I'm in the spring camp. I've converted two of the newer mechanical return measures to spring operated. I do put two springs on the measures.

My 550B came from Dillon years ago with two springs.
It's never given a problem and I will not be changing anything.

I use a really heavy woman's hair band. It's made from elastic and lasts longer than a common rubber band. It puts a good 3lbs of force on the charge bar to close it. The little transfer bar dealie that goes from the ram to the powder measure, I pull that off and zip tie the floating metal bit in the upward position. My brass actuates the powder drop, not the ram and that silly transfer bar.

Hornady case activated powder die connected to a compatible drum powder measurer and problems solved. Hard to believe dillon hasn't come up with a better powder measure design.

As for an answer to the actual question... Springs or a rubber band way to go.
