dillon mr bullet feeder with bulk 55 gr bullets question

i was going to buy a mr bullet feeder for my 650 to load up a bunch of plinking rounds, ,,,,but i was reading that the mr bullet feeders say to use only boat tail bullets,,,, i think they are the hornady and the do have somewhat of a boat tail. hopefully they will work. just wondering if anyone has loaded these on a dillon 650 with a mr bullet feeder and had any tips,, i had read another thread to get a Lee M die to put a slight flare in the neck so the bullets sits in it straight. thanks for any tips.

does anyone know of a big dillon support group somewhere? i guess i could check dillon's website

Brian Enos forum has a good Dillon section and there are several facebook groups.

I believe it's a Lyman M die. I have a 223 conversion for my bullet feeder but haven't used it yet. Hopefully the fmjbt bullets work ok. It might be pretty sensitive to setup and get adjusted. You may have to play with hopper angles and the slider adjustment to get the bullets to lineup correctly.

I am loading out 1000’s of rounds of 300 blackout with Speer 130 HP’s (flat base) on a Dillon 650. The flat base was a challenge at first but once you get the collator nose guides set and the holder for the nose guides adjusted in/out things really come together.

At first I was getting rounds upside down and if they weren‘t upside down then they where side ways and wouldn’t fall into the output spring. I jimmy rigged a wire to hit the bullets that we’re laying on there side and help them fall into the output spring, which solved that problem.

The second issue was bullets going in nose first. The fix for that was to adjust the nose guides (height) and the housing for the nose guides (in/out). What you want is the bullets that are standing up to ride on the collator bottom plate and pass right on by the nose guides, and bullets upside down need to fall into the nose guides so they can hit the stepped ramp and be flipped.

The third issue to work through is getting the ball bearings in the bullet dropper body in the correct place so you don’t get two bullets at a time.

I wish I had some pictures, it would describe it better. I can get you some but it will pr be a week from now. Beings you’re bullet will be a lot smaller there could be other issues that come up. There are some helpful posts on there website.

good luck!

Oh, yes you want to get an M-die for sure.

Flare the case slightly. The bullet seating should straighten the flare out but just in case use a crimp die, just don’t set it to actually crimp. Have loaded tens of thousands of 55 grain cannon fodder and even do the same process with boat tail bullets.
