Dillion or Lyman Apex?

My nephew is looking to buy a Dillion xl750 with a bullet feeder and powder check. He was also entertaining the Lyman Apex something or another that is comparable to the above. He's shooting competitive pistol (9mm) currently but will probably load for .233/556 down the road.

Yeas and nays to each manufacturer based upon actually knowledge would be nice. Thank you.

There are not many companies that stand behind their products like Dillon. What warranty does Lyman offer?

There is an abundance of aftermarket parts/accessories for Dillon presses… not so much for Lyman.

I have the following reloaders:

Three Star universals
Dillon 1100 dedicate to 9mm
Lyman All American, the new one
Camdex dedicated to 45 ACP
I have not had a Lyman/Mark 7 of any type.

Lyman & Dillon both stand behind their products in my experience. I do not consider myself ham handed, but I have broke products from both companies. You would be very hard pressed to break a Star, they are very well made.

The 1100 will load enough ammo for me to feed my Uzi SMG in a couple hours to fill up a 30 cal ammo can. If you want to run a bullet feeder and a powder check die, you will run out of room on the 1100. The Mark 7 will allow it. I have lighting on the 1100 to be able to see in the case. I have yet to have a squib.

I would spend the extra $ on an 1100 or Mark 7 vs. the smaller Dillons personally. In the long run you won't notice it and you get what you pay for...

I would say the $1500 difference between a 750 and the 1100 is more than a little... You can nearly purchase three of the 750s' for what an 1100 costs. I have 750s' set up in 9mm, 308, and a third one ordered I will set up in 40.

What's the saying; different strokes for different folks...?

As a follow-up, my nephew did buy the Dillon XL750. He's already up and running with the 9mm. He likes it a lot.

Glad the OP is happy with the Dillon. One other thing for people to consider that sometimes gets overlooked is that typically the bigger the unit, the less likely it is to do magnum cartridges. 750 supports a bunch, 1050 can do a few and none of the Lyman/Mark7 presses can't do any magnums.

If you are shooting that much magnum rifle you need to load on a progressive, I want to know what you are hunting!
