Differences in 80 gr Bergers

Since I am new to 6BR what are the differences between Bergers 80 grain Varmint, old MEF?) & their 80 grain Match Bullet? I have some of both, primary use is for varmints. I see they have different B.C.'s / Different shapes. I assume the match to be a little more accurate & better at longer ranges, how about load differences Thanks

when I was shooting a 243AI for varmints I used the 80 mef's for live targets to keep ricochets to a minimum but I also used the match style with the same load to shoot paper.

They both shot well with the same charge and primers.

Thanks for the reply, just trying to tap some of the vast knowledge that is present on this site! Been a Lurker for a while just recently joined & donated:)Anything to help out, just about done with the new rifle can't wait. First 6BR, so any help to get me started on the right foot is greatly appreciated. Most of you have forgot more about Precision Reloading than I know. And THANKS to the Moderator / EDITOR and everyone who has helped this site.My hats off for a job well done! :thumb:

Eric Stecker told me the only significant difference is the size of the hollow point. The Match bullets are closed up a bit more. They will both work well vs. varmints but the MEF type may be a bit more explosive. The match bullets have a slightly higher BC.

I was shooting the old 80 grn. Berger MEF's in my .243 A.I. with a 1-10" twist with good results several years ago. When I went to reorder, the bullets were called 80 grn. MEF varmint match bullets. The ad said they were the same as the old ones with a different name. When I received the bullets, they were clearly a different bullet. I decided to try them and they were even better than the old MEF's in the accuracy department.

The Moderator,Paul) states it well. For clarification the MEF or Maximum Expansion Factor, today is referred to as Varmint) has a slightly larger hollow point. Everything else is the same as the target nose version. The MEF was created many years ago when some varmint hunters told Walt that they liked the accuracy of our target bullets but they would like them to come apart faster on prairie dogs. The only thing we could do to provide them with an option quickly was to point the bullets partially.

This created a larger hollow point using the same die we used to make the regular nose, target) bullets. I won't go into the troubles we had ejecting these bullets from the die but these troubles compelled us to order dies that use a larger ejection pin. Today the Varmint,MEF) have their own die with a larger ejection pin but the ogive shape is as close to the same shape of the target bullet as a die maker can get.

This larger hollow point does lower the BC,more drag) but the inherent accuracy potential is the same. We use the same J4 jackets and virgin lead in the varmint bullets that we use to make our target bullets. This is why we refer to them as MATCH Varmint.

Initially we made varmint bullets in several calibers and sizes. We have since learned that in the larger calibers,6mm and up) the target bullets work just as well on varmints as the Varmint bullets. ,Frankly the larger Varmint nose only helps the situation on small varmints like prairie dogs, crows and squirrels. Anything bigger like ground hogs, fox and coyotes don't need the Varmint nose) Because of this we have discontinued making the Varmint style bullets in everything except 17 cal and 22 cal. We have some of these discontinued bullets left on the shelf so if you want to get the last of them at a discount call Shawn McKenna at 714-447-5425. If you want to get more 6mm or large Varmint nose bullets you need to order 10,000 or more but most people don't need that many by themselves.

Eric Stecker
