When I size a 6br case in my Redding bushing full length die it only sizes a portion of the neck. I have another bushing die (Harrels I believe) that sizes the neck all the way down to the shoulder. Question is whether one of these is more desirable than the other, and also do I need the expander ball in the Redding die? I'm learning fast that reloading and precision handloading are two completely different animals.

The *Full Length* bushing does are not micrometer.
Given the way that they are built internally, I do not understand how a FL bushing die can size all the way to the shoulder.
The bushing has to rest on something. The thickness of that, for a lack of a better word, shelf, is not going to get resized.

Last night, I tried to measure the "unsized" portion of a neck from a bushing die and could not get the blade part of my caliper to get a seat - there was no visible or measurable section of unsized neck.
If that is not all to you, then we have very different ways of measuring and describing things - there comes a point in life when OCD becomes a crippling factor in communicating.

The bottom line is that the OP asked about Redding FL bushing dies. Your response mentioned a micrometer top. The *FL* Type S dies do not have a micrometer top. Perhaps they are very similar internally. I suspect that they are.
The bottom line is that the thickness of the shelf that the bushing rides on, plus the thickness of the "slop" between the bushing and the shelf to allow it to self-center plus the thickness of the taper in the lip of the bushing hole will not be sized.
It is also common for folks to not cinch the bushing retaining sleeve all the way down to allow extra slop so that carbon, lube, etc. don't gum up the works and cause the bushing to not center. That would increase the value of the "slop" term.
On cases resized on my Type S FL dies, this is easily seen with the naked eye and a magnifying glass...or at least my 51 year old naked eyes require the magnifying glass.

My "S" and my Comps both have the same body. There is no problems with the last 0.003" not being sized.

OP: You do not need the expander ball. They mostly serve no purpose in the context of precision reloading.
If you ding the neck on one of your cases, you have a couple of choices: 1. Toss it. 2. Iron out the ding with the expanding mandrel for your neck turning tool.
John Whidden has indicated that he is going to supply expanding "balls" for his dies sized to the 1/2 thou so that you could use them along with standard 1 thou bushings to get finer control of neck tension.
Errata: Originally said "Robert Whitley". Meant "John Whidden". Get the two "W" names confused at times.

Wilsons dies size about 2/3 of the neck , Neil Jones dies let you adjust how much of the neck you want to size the thought is the unsize part of the neck centers the case in the chamber
