Dies for Use in Factory Rifle

Hi,

I intend to step into accuracy shooting using a 6mmBR factory rifle (probably a Savage LRPV single shot). I am uncertain on appropriate reloading dies for this gun, knowing that in time, I will probably put on another barrel with potentially slightly different chamber dimensions.

For the factory barrel, I was considering a standard Forster resizing die, reamed by Forster to a certain size. But does not the size depend on neck wall thickness? Not sure it makes any difference, but I plan on using Lapua brass and using different bullets (until I determine what works best). I thought a Forster micrometer type seater die would work well. I am using a Forster Co-Ax press. I already have tools for measuring runout, neck wall thickness, and have a lathe if I ever got into neckturning.

Thanks for any help clearing the fog.

Phil

Nothing wrong with Forster Dies infact they're pretty dam good! Sounds like your set up is quality stuff. Load and shoot, don't worry about it.

I am hardly an expert and sometimes feel like an overrated novice, but I'll ask anyway. I had heard that using bushings (in either a neck bushing die or FL bushing die) can lead to the formation of donuts at the case/neck juncture. I also read the Lee Collet die may be better for avoiding this.

Phil,

You are not necking down the brass so you don`t even need to worry about ever forming a doughnut.

The bushings are great for adjusting neck tension while reloading.

Start off with standard full length die and build up from there.
Standard no turn factory chambers will give you accuracy that's hard to believe. 8)
Only problem with factory barrels and chambers is most have long throats so you'll be stuck shooting heavier bullets so you'll still have enough bullet in the case neck. :(
IMHO, custom cut short throat chambers are the way to go. The throat will grow soon enough so it'd best to start off short.
