Die Help

My first foray into precision reloading. I'm building a 6BR and need some dies. If I go with the Forster or Redding neck bushing dies will I also need to F/L resize at some stage. This is a custom rifle, not a factory.

TIA

Scott

Buy a custom set of dies that will full length size each and every time for the best consistency...
You'll always end up needing to full length them anyways, so why not have them the same each and every time...

Sorry to butt in but I've been under the assumption that if u Fl size every time u could quite possibly be over working your brass, please correct me if I'm wrong.

By full size resizing, you are only talking about setting the shoulder back enough to close the bolt with no feel. That could be as little as a couple tenths of a thou. In a hunting round, you would set the die to set the shoulder back about .0015 to .002 which would work the brass slightly more and yes there is a difference BUT very slight. Annealing will pretty much take care of the issue. At .0005 or less, I can't believe that you could see any difference in longivity.

If you use a custom reamed die that matches the chamber, you will not be working the brass nearly as much as if you were working brass in a general use FL die and shooting it in a factory chamber. I think the best of all possible dies is a Redding "S" die custom built to your chamber. Redding will do that for you if you wish. There are other custom die makers as well. I like the Redding as there are appropriate bushings in my inventory already for most of the cartridges I shoot.

If you are REALLY serious about getting the BEST accuracy, you'll be buying your own chamber reamer and having a trustworthy gunsmith chamber your blanks for you.

Since I have not won the Lottery yet, but I can change a barrel, within limits, I like the Redding small base "S" die, which works just fine since I set all my chambers at the minimum SAAMI dimensions or the equivalent for the non SAAMI listed ones.
