Dial indicators

Good test indicators

I was able to find some very good Interapid and Brown & Sharpe indicators
with short probes----.0005" and .0001"-----for good prices at pawn shops.

Couldn't find a used Interapid with the long 2.75" stem and had to buy it new.

There might be some good equipment available for good prices.

I'm Wondering how and why this thread got renewed. No matter. I'll chime in.

I Picked this 0.00005 DTI up a few months ago on ebay for something like $75 if I remember right.

Brown & Sharpe make a 1.75 inch stylus, but you can modify an Interapid 2.75 inch stylus by turning it down and tapping it to B&S threads (M1.8x0.35).

It really depends on where the bonz originated, AcklemanII.
I really have benefitted from this thread as I had forgotten about the small stash I'd brought back from my two Haitian mission trips in the 80s. These are the real deal, straight from a Citee Simone purveyor, right outside of Port au Prince. They've never seen the light of day, I think they are in the box I was sold.....the guy wouldn't have lied, right? Anyway, to do as much good as I can, just mail me a cloth, no larger than 12" square (red, blue bandana size), fold a double sawbuck neatly, facing out.
I'll place it in close proximity to the box for 12.33 hours and return in your postage paid envelope of choice. My suggestion would be to lay it on the head stock over night with all lights off. If you try to get a Two Fer and give it to a buddy w/o paying for a double dip, (bargain priced at ONLY $35), you are guaranteed to split the tenon threads on the last pass.
These primo bonz have not been diluted or weakened by being exposed to non Haitian soil.
PM is best private way for queing up.
We wouldn't want any competitors to know about your Juju, would we? ;))

Doesnt changing the stylus length affect sensitivity? I thought doubling the length of stylus on a .0005 indicator gave you a .001 indicator?

I like the teeth from a black cat along with the chicken bones

I'm guessing it would be a lot to ask you to describe your method?
I like the 3mm ball on my indicator's it helps a lot with the bounce.
Are you referring to chamber out of a steady rest I use brass jaws in a steady rest but I have heard of the method you described.I turn a clean up cut between centers an I use a dead center to put barrel in a steady rest wrong but that's the way I have always chambered barrels.

Yes
I have been setting up a steady to try that method just to try it and see if I like that method. Do you re center cut the barrel dialing off the bore? I could use a live center in headstock if I needed but I dont see why a dead one wouldnt work just as well you would want it for driving it anyway so why not.

Actually when using a steady you keep the steady rest pads loose when reaming and the reamer follows the bore- so pulling the reamer out the barrel drops a bit. You can see some of these methods im sure in butch lambert’s 130 page pdf on barrel chambering- or i should say this is one method. Lots of top gunsmiths use the steadyrest method- most dont say so to keep the hobbyists from arguing
