Dial caliper repair FYI

Just an FYI really. I have a set of B&S dial calipers that had started getting tighter in the slide mechanism. I disassembled the unit in an attempt to "clean" it and improve the movement. Suffices to say that the calipers were in need of repair and reassembly by the time I was finished.

Turns out, there's not many people doing that kind of work. After some research and several calls I found a place in Tempe, AZ called Washington Precision Repair. I shipped them the calipers a week and a half ago. They called me today and said they were shipping them back to me, good as new. Said they were only going to charge me shipping because the unit just needed cleaning.

I don't generally endorse products/services but this is a good business, providing a valuable service. Thought I would pass it along.

That is valuable information. I will be giving them a try. Have a couple pair of Brown and Sharpe to send them for repairs. Thanks for posting.

I would be lost without my B&S 6" caliper.

They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder. I suspect that may be garbage.

That being said, I've spent the last week or so using an old set of Midway calipers I bought about 20 years ago. I will be glad to see my calipers come back home.

Most calipers are made of stainless steel. I slide mine apart (there should be a small screw that prevents it from over extending, take it out) and spray the rack (teeth) with a small spray bottle set to stream. Usually that gets the gunk out of the teeth. I wouldn't do this with the section with the dial. One time I put it together and still had something in it. A few times running it from min to max and then took it apart and cleaned again. Good as new.
