Dewey Rods

I have a problem with the bearings failing in the handles of dewey rods. This is occuring to often and I am getting less than a year out of them. Has any one else had this problem?

Never had that problem. I would say let the handles soak in a jar of rubbing alcohol overnight, they unscrew. Nothing to loose on this one. I feel Dewey rods are without equal.

YOU BET!
I have had to rework 4 of my 9 Dewey rods because the handle has froze up...I made a spanner wrench from an old screwdriver to remove the nut, the nut is loctited on )....Use a hand drill with a letter bit one size over to bore out the rod hole and put it back together....They work better than new....Don't loose the bearings because you can't find more the right size....

Spring, I had that happen to me one time back in the late 80's. There are a couple of things to be aware of on Dewey rods. First, you have to remember that the bearing races are made of plastic, so if/when you get a patch or brush stuck in the bore, don't be pounding on the back of a Dewey rod or you may end up trashing the bearing races.

Second, plastic bearing races do wear out. When this happens, the handle will no longer rotate as the patch or brush goes through the bore. If the brush cannot rotate, the the brush may/will scratch the dickens out of the bore. First evidence of froze up bearings in the handle is the brush constantly unscrewing.

It is important to wipe your rod off and not let the caustic fluids run into the bearing races on any cleaning rod.

If your bearing races end up ruined, Dewey sells a replacement handle for the cleaning rod cheap...they are great people to work with.

I can't say that Dewey makes the best rod on the market...there are some really good cleaning rods out there now. I have been using the same set of two rods since 1990. I have replaced the handle on one rod.

Please don't forget the proper use of a bore guide which is to keep the rod centered in the bore so that it does not wear the rifling out with rod flex during the cleaning process. Two makers and two only make a rod guide with a bushing that fits on the rod which is Lucas and Neil Jones. If you are not using a Lucas or Neil Jones rod guide, make no mistake about it, you are wearing your barrel with the cleaning rod. A rod guide will not wear out in your life time unless you run over it with the vehicle which makes it a really great investment.

Hello Everyone,

Here is the latest information on how to update your old design Dewey rod handles. About four to five years ago, Dewey started using metal races in their handles. If you have the older design, you can send your old rods in to them and for a nominal fee, they will replace your old handles with the new handles, and bearing assembly. As long as you have the needed equipment to loosen up the old Loc-Tite, you can get the new handles from Dewey to install yourself. I updated all of my old Dewey rods and I have found that the new design rod handles spin as easily as the Bore Tech rod handles. You can contact Dewey at their offices at Oxford, CT. at 203-264-3064, or by e-mail at info@deweyrods.com. I hope this information will help all of you with your older Dewey rods.

Cordially,
Bob Blaine
