Detachable magazine recommendations

The M5 style bottom metal take the AI style mags. HS precision is BDL bottom metal which is a different inlet. At least the 1st generation was BDL. Remington factory bottom metal with the floor plate is considered BDL or M4. Stocky's has M4 bottom metal and mags for factory in-letted stocks. Most of the Badger, Seekins, PT&G, AICS, Hawkins etc is M5. If it says accepts AICS mags, it needs M5 bottom metal.
Just one data point and may not work in other actions but the H.S. Precision Gen 2 works in the aforementioned 28 Nosler and it's a Kelbly's Atlas Tactical cut for AICS mags.

Now we're getting somewhere! I have a Bell and Carlson for a short M700 inletted for Badger bottom metal. Now I just have to decide which M5 without the hanging-down release to get. Any real preference on which one?

I just purchased Curtis bottom metal. I love it. Release it built in the trigger guard. I put pics of it in one of my posts. I also bought there 3 round mags. They are almost flush. I have some 5/10s also but the 3 round mags make it nice for carry.

I have PT&G, Badger and West Texas Ordinance bottom metal. All using Accurate Magazines. I have had on one occassion a magazine drop to the ground from an accidental release of that latch. Decided on the HS Precision once it happened. The problem with the HS Precision ( at least mine) was the inside trigger guard mag release button was so hard to push and release that mag that I sold the bottom metal because of it. The Gen II may be better I don't know.

Well, it looks like I'm starting over again! After talking with Mr. Curtis and getting his assurance that he had one in stock and would send it right away, I'm still waiting! If we did business like that, I'd expect to see our good customers on our driveway with torches and pitchforks! If anyone has any other advice, please share it. My two requirements are the longest COAL I can get and no obtrusive mag release.
Thanks!
Steve

The Curtis bottom metal is a knockoff copy of APA's (American Precision Arms). It looks to me like they are in stock at APA right now. APA has always been far better for in stock parts than Curtis. I've bought many parts from APA and not had a single issue.

Just a quick question, why do you want to go a detachable magazine on your coyote rifle? Is it because the stock is already inlet for M5 bottom metal? If so Hawkins makes a new bottom metal that is an Orberndorf/BDL style that takes a Wyatts box but fits in a M5 inlet. I have used 4 so far and they are great.
Myself I don't like detachable mags for hunting rifles, I don't like a mag sticking out the bottom, you can loose them and ruin a hunt and they add a lot of weight to the rifle, I would rather put the weight elsewhere where you can gain something like heavier barrel or scope. Anyhow just wanted to let you know its an option, here is the link. https://hawkinsprecision.com/our-products/bottom-metal/

OK, so now I'm going with the Hawkins! Somehow you can achieve a 3.100" COAL, I assume only with their magazines, which are hard to find! I like Magpul magazines; suppose I could "hog one out" to achieve the long length?
Where do you get the 3.100" figure? Hawkins SA magnum magazines like Curtis are 2.980" OAL (internal). It's not possible to get longer, the magazines at the front are already thin at that length.

Are you mixing up XM length bottom metal? Those are not compatible with a SA and are intended for medium length actions.

That magazine option is an internal magazine option. It requires a little bit of gunsmith or DIY grinding for proper fit. It's not a DBM. I have a Wyatt's internal that I'm installing in a Rem 700 SA. Allows for 3.100 OAL. The best you'll get from a DBM unless you go with a Savage is around 2.750 for good feed option.

My walking-hunting is somewhat limited now, so most of my hunting is done at night off my front porch or at my neighbor's ranch when he is calving. I've had lots of internal magazine rifles, and just want to try this in a bolt gun! I'll get one that is flush and only holds a few rounds. For anyone that's assisting me in this, my cartridge length will be about 2.900" Another consideration: will an Ackley case (less taper) feed OK without a bunch of tweaking?

I've been mixed up since I started this project! As I said in the previous post, my cartridge length will be about 2.900" Perhaps I'm chasing the wrong thing; are the internal dimensions of the bottom metal assemblies the same, and the different available cartridge lengths just in the brand of magazine??? Any more input will be appreciated!
Steve

The detachable bottom metal (aka DBM (Badger, Curtis, APA, Hawkins)) we've been discussing for Rem short action removable short magazines are based on the AI (Accuracy International) AICS pattern magazine dimensions which include magazines from Curtis, Hawkins, Accurate Mag, MDT, etc... The magnum magazines will have a max internal OAL ~2.980". Standard length (non magnum) magazines will have an internal OAL dimension of 2.880" with the exception of an AI or Accurate mag without the "blinder plate" which will be 2.980". Curtis and Hawkins std cartridge magazines are ~2.880". The external length dimension on all AICS short magazines is ~3.060".

Hawkins SA short mag magazines and bottom metal are available here:

You can use the Hawkins magazine in an APA bottom metal as well. If they are listed as AICS pattern they are interchangeable.

Thank you so much for the very complete explanation of this! That's exactly what I needed!
Best wishes,
Steve
You are welcome. Also note that if you use the longer internal length magazines (2.980") most all actions will have to have the feed ramp modified for bullet tip clearance. A notch needs to be cut ~.100" deep into the feed ramp.
