detachable mag ?

There is probably a really easy answer to this question, but how do I determine if a given caliber will work with a detach. mag? I know .308 and .223 are not a problem, but what if I want to know if can use a .243 or a 7mm WSM? Is it the over all bullet/case length? Can you use a belted case?

Any info is appreciated.....I'm trying to plan a build, and this will be my first "custom" rifle.....

I can't speak for the Badger Ord DBM set-ups as for maximum cartridge OAL as I haven't installed one yet.

H&S Precision DBM are slighjtly longer than OEM Rem boxes.
H&S Precision Short action boxes measure 2.850" max OAL.
H&S Precision Long action boxes measure 3.650" max OAL.
And yes, belted mags feed out of an H&S by altering the feed lips per cartride.
The Rem Ultra Mags,SAUM's,WSM's & WSSM's are beltless cases.

So its just the over-all length I have to worry about? The diameter of the cartridge is compensated for by altering the feed lips of the mag until it feeds reliably?

Correct.
H&S Precision makes an aluminum tool to bend the feed lips for proper function.
Thw tool also has lip width measurements per caliber.
