dented shoulders

i just sat down tonight to decap and size some 6br rounds i had shot last week and i noticed after sizing 5 cases that one had a small rectangular dent in the shoulder. i thought it might be from to much case lube. so i began wiping the necks and shoulders before sizing the cases. all went good for another 5 five rounds but then i noticed another dent. so i looked at all the cases i had not sized yet and sure enough another 20 had dents in the shoulder in the exact same place and angle. they were just above the shoulder body junction. I did not wipe out the excess oil the barrel with a clean patch before firing. Could this be the problem? Also are these cases safe to fire?

jp,
clean your chamber please! then check your dies and make sure you don't hav something in there. just a small burr or piece of debris can wreak consistant havoc on your brass. my first guess was lube as well. i think your brass is fine to shoot. you will pop the dent out at next firing. but make sure the dent is in a "safe" place. (not neck/shoulder or shoulder/case body junction) pix would help give a better guess about safeness of cases. i hope this helps..
cheers,
doc

Sounds like a piece of powder got stuck in the chamber and stuck long enough to stamp that dent in the shoulder during firing to me.

jon i think you nailed it. i pulled a bullet out in the chamber last week when i was trying to extract a loaded round and got powder in the chamber. i cleaned it as best i could at the range and again at home.

Powder seems like a reasonable answer although the dents seem larger than a grain of powder. I had dents just behind the shoulder and in the end I feel it was due to underloading with a slow powder (H4831). Those dents are much worse than yours and they fireformed out on the next loading.

I had a similar experience as RonAKA had when I was working up a load for the 39 gr. Sierra BlitzKing bullets in my Savage 12VLP in .204 Ruger. I had been using 24.8 gr. of Reloder 10X and ran out of powder. I bought another pound, but it was a different lot number. I started with a wee bit lower powder charge weight and here's what several of my casings looked like:

I eventually had to increase my powder charge from 24.8 gr. of Rel 10X with the first lot of powder all the way up to 25.5 gr. with the new lot of powder to get the same velocity and to eliminate the casing wall dents.

The dents in your casings don't look like mine, but as someone suggested, those dents may be the result of something in the shoulder area of the chamber. I surmised that I was not using enough powder and the casing was not expanding fast enough and far enough to seal the chamber and prevent the expanding gas from going back into my chamber.

yea this shouldnt be a low charge problem these rounds were loaded with 30 grs of varget. i am going to clean it again and watch the cases to see if they fireform out and if any new cases develop these dents. thanks for all the help

jps120,
After seeing the pictures and the same thing happening to me, I'd say it comes from powder getting lodged in the chamber. I had that happen to me when I was trying to load bullets barely into the casing to get them into the lands. Well I got the bullet into the lands alright and made the terrible mistake of opening the bolt. Out comes the casing with powder dumping to the chamber and all over. I cleaned it out the best I could (or so I thought), but a few flakes remained only to dent my new Lapua 6mmbr casings. Went in and did a better job of cleaning out the residual flakes and no more dents. Hope that helps ya.
