Dented Match Brass?

I bought 2100 rounds of once fired Hornady Match .308 brass on another forum with a 100% trade track record. Brass arrives and about 50-60% of the brass is dented. Called seller, said I was expecting nice, once fired brass and 50% or more is what I deem unusable. He stated he was not a reloader and just assumed the brass was ok. He is a police officer and the brass is from the SWAT team. Said the brass was fired from a bolt gun as well as an SR25 and an AR10. I suspect the autoloader is where the brass got dented. Most dents are in case wall not neck or shoulder. He said proceeds from sale of brass went right back into the team for other equipment. He also sells large quantities of 556 brass as well. Is there a way to rehab this brass or is it toast? Got what I thought was a fair deal on the brass, $225 shipped for 2100+ rounds of 1x Hornady match brass. Hmmmmmmm. Ideas?

Full length size it and shoot it. No big deal but understand brass shot in another chamber, even when full length sized, my not extract from your chamber. Just part of the gamble one takes when buying once fired brass.

I agree, full length size, prep, load and shoot it. You need to do that to the rest of the brass anyway before competing with it.

What SheepDog said. Bulk brass like that gets dented just from hitting the ground handling and shipping, etc. It really was quite a deal, less than .11
per piece of brass. Your sizer die will iron out the dents on the softer necks. Be ready for some to size easily and some you kind of have to stand on. Different guns, particularly the semi auto guns.

When you get bargain brass just be prepared to do a little work on it as well as the possibility you may have to discard a piece or two along the way.

Like it's been said, F/L Size and fire-form to YOUR chamber. The dents will go away. If for some reason the "dents" also have gouges in them (like some military brass can have) just discard. You can throw away a hundred pieces and only see your price per case go up 1/4 cent per case for the entire lot. Then you can recover some of that "loss" when you sell it to the recycle yard.

BTW, the sidewall dent is most likely from the brass deflector on the side of the Upper on the Semi's. It usually has radius'd edges that don't gouge, just dent. Much of the dent will actually get worked out when you F/L size.

If you decide you don't like the Brass, PM me. I'll take it off your hands for what you paid for it. Regular price for new is ~ $0.60 per case and one firing has only taken a fraction of it's life away.

It is fine. Just be thankful it was not a G3 that it was fired in.
Ya, I once had a pile of 10MM brass that I was so excited to have and be able to sell. I did not know much then and sold some. I looked like a jerk cause it had been fired in a HK and it had weaknesses in the walls, longitudinal, causing multiple splits up and down the case. I did not know they had some crazy fluted chamber. I felt terrible having sold some. I never heard from the guy, but to this day I feel bad about it.

I would happily reload this "unusable" brass. What you describe has not stopped me from getting 8+ loads in an AR-10. I don't know why you would think it would be an issue.

About the only rifle brass that doesn't get some sort of dings in firing is that single-loaded in a bolt gun during slow-fire at a match or practice. Anything shot from a semi-auto is subject to some abuse.

obviously you have never reloaded ctg brass from a H-K with a fluted chamber,,,the brass looks like it was ran over by a bulldozer,,,,,just full length size a few and see how they work,,,find whatever procedure works and use it on all of them,,,Roger

Have some of that kind of brass now. Haven't sized it yet though..
