Dented Annealed Case Necks

Webster said:
Why would you think annealing after sizing gives more uniform neck tension? If your cases are only falling about a foot onto a hard surface and denting, the necks must be very soft. Are the necks starting to glow orange/red in a dark room when annealing? I have been criticized for mentioning my plier test on case necks. It’s not a hardness determination but used to determine if you have way over annealed the case neck. Crush the neck of a case that’s never been annealed and an annealed one. Compare the difference. If you can easily close the case mouth of an annealed case its way over done. Very little neck tension regardless of the bushing size you use. If the heat from annealing distorts the neck area I think sizing after annealing would correct this.
Back when I first started annealing I did it up to the point where my necks would just show a hint of color... Now I anneal watching just for medal impurities burning out the case.. It's an orange flare, I believe magnesium or zinc... Zinc I think???

Sounds like you got it figured out
I hope!! LOL!! I came across Orkan's thread a while back and started doing some experimenting.. I can honestly say that watching for the orange flare up is the best way I know how... It just works... On a side note,, I think a lot of shooters would shit themselves if they saw how hot the factory anneals! Think about it for a minute... If you can see that silver tint on some brand of cases, that means that particular company made that case glow in broad day light when they annealed it.. That's the only way I've seen the silver fired medal color occur...

I've annealed thousands of cases with my Giraud, and haven't had any issues.

You may be over thinking this.
This is pretty much my own experience after annealing thousands of cases with a Benchsource annealer. I go high tech and put a cardboard box under the hole. Never seen any problem. You are over thinking this.
