Delrin Bullets

ab_bentley

I fix stuff, sometimes....
I have been fascinated by lightweight self defense bullets for a while now and would have tried this if I had the oppertunity.

My question is has anyone on here played with making lightweight Delrin bullets? I have had a few people hint that they were using them in 44Mag with Bullseye charge and hitting 2000FPS + with light charges. I know Speer and a few other comapanies make "Practice" bullets that are undersized and not ment to be shot with powder behind them. I am talking about true .358" or any other sized bullets. Just trying to get a feel of the area. ADam

I have never tried making bullets from delrin or other plastic, but I have made bullets from hot glue by injecting it into my bullet molds. I usually shoot them with only a primer or a few grains of Bullseye getting anywhere from 900-1300fps. They are more for fun than anything.

But I do have a stick of delrin about .5" in diameter I may chuck in the lathe and see what happens. Do you know if the others were cutting grease grooves in them and using lube or just shooting them dry?

i have flipped a sabot around and shot it out of a 50 cal muzzle loader powered by just the shotgun primer. it will knock a pop can around.

I don't know if they had greese rings, I would suspect that the Delrin is slick enough to have no issues. ADam

Delrin Bullets

Howdy !

You may want to check-out " castboolits " on the web.

They cover a variety of topics covered there ( besides lead bullets ).

One area talked about is " hot glue " bullets.

The military looked at " directionally-solidified liquid crystal polymers, for use as a sabot material when shooting flechettes from a .223 case.

Another possibility might be " casting resin " , available @ hobby stores.

Speer' shot cups for .357Mag might have sufficient diameter for your use ? Wouldn't cost much to find out.

Best of luck in your endeavors !

Regards,
357Mag

Thanks for the wishes. I have read about the glue bullets, seems like something I will try also. I have a good stock of Delrin so when I head back to Ohio next week I am going to find someone to turn it for me, if I make back I will post the results. Adam

Not really answer, but a partial answer. A friend of mine has had delrin projectiles turned down to use in 37mm and 75mm cannons, if it'll work for cannon projectiles, I assume it would work for smaller projectiles.

I always heard the opposite, that your supposed to go fast and use air gun to cool it but i dont see why coolant would not work. Id love to try some in 22 or 243. I dont know how pointy you could make them, id think the tips would want to make the bullets flip. Id think the the bet would be to copy a round noise type bullet like 30-30 style

Well I ordered some Delrin rod and next week will have it in my hands and to the shop. I will try em out and give back pics and data. Adam

Just a thought. If you're looking for something to shoot in the basement, you may want to look at some adult air pistols. I recently bought a IZH 46M match pistol for $350 shipped on black Friday. It has an outstanding trigger and with a 2X scope mounted it was able to deliver a .55” 10 shot group at 10 meters with inexpensive Gamo Match 17cal pellets that are cheaper than primers. Because of its low velocity you don't have to worry about lead particles being blown all over the place or breathing in smoke from powder and primers.

I would be interested to see just what the bbl wear rate was with Delrin. If the rifle was just an old plinker, no problem.

Not sure if I would run those thru a really good bbl.

Years ago a friend of mine was in the artificial knee, hip business. He remarked that only older folks were candidates for the replacements because the delrin sockets wore out the stainless steel balls on the various joints when installed in younger more active patients.

That may just be an urbin legend but it is worth looking into.

The Pistol I am going to be using them in is an older SW Model 66 357 Mag, 4" barrel. It is my main pistol for general carry, Again these Delrin bullets aren't going to be a steady diet just a good long expiermentation. I want to get something like 3000 FPS outta my 6" Ruger Redhawk. I will keep you posted on results. Adam
