Delightful Reading -- .300 H&H

I've had one .300 H&H, a pre-'64 Model 70. A very accurate rifle, but too much kick of me; finally sold it. The alleged improvements on the cartridge, in the form of most other .300 magnums, weren't enough to negate the use of the original.

Agreed. But, new seems to trump old, established designs hands down. Marketing rules the world.

I had one built this year to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the H&H!

I picked up this model 70 chambered in 7mm STW to use for the magnum length action for cheap ($600 or $700). I dropped it off and had Shawn true up the face and install a Brux #3 barrel finished at 26". He bedded the action into this McMillan Pre-64 with the updated McWoody design and cerekoted the barreled action and the PTG oberndorf bottom metal. When I received it from him I installed a Timney trigger set at 2 pounds and mounted up a NF NXS 2.5-10x32mm scope in Warne rings and bases.

I built a load that is a solid 1/2 minute rifle to 600 yards (furthest I will shoot on game).

The load:
Hornady Prepped .300 H&H Brass
71.6 gr H4831 Powder
Federal 215M Primer
180 gr Barnes TTSX
CBTO 2.930" OAL~3.560"ish

Velocity on 15 shots
Average 2966.2 FPS
Extreme Spread 17.6 FPS
Standard Deviation 6.5 FPS

The only thing that I would change on this rifle is the barrel contour or the stock fill or both. This setup came in right at 9 pounds 9 ounces. It's a little heavier than I thought it would be, but still a huntable weight. I was shooting more for in the 8 to 8.5 pound range. But that extra pound sure makes this rifle recoil nicely on the bench. Its very comparable to a 8.5 pound 30-06 I have.
