Delightful Reading -- .300 H&H

In the April/May issue of Handloader Magazine Terry Wieland has an excellent article on "Holland's .300", a well written (as is the norm) article on the great .300 H&H cartridge.

To my surprise and great delight he also has an article in the most recent Shooting Times magazine on the compared efficiency of the 300 H&H, the .308 Norma Magnum, the .300 Win Mag and the 300 Weatherbee, I believe, cartridges.

Two great articles on a woefully underappreciated 30 magnum case by one of the best writers plying his trade today imo.

I have 100 pieces of once fired Remington Match brass in 300 H&H I received from an old match shooter. I need a Pre-64 to enjoy them with!

Either that one or a good Browning(FN made) safari grade bolt rifle. Either one would be just fine imo. Good luck with your quest. I found an all original M70 a few years ago and it is beautiful. The 26" barrel may be too ungainly for some but I live with it.

Terry is a pretty decent writer.
I think Ken Waters’ pet load write up of the old 300 H&H was a nice one. A little outdated as far as powders go but still good reading.

I agree re Ken Waters' writings. His compilation of articles book should be a must have imo. Regarding powders, well everything new is not necessarily better. IMR 4350, 4831 and H4831 are hard to beat.

The old Norma 205 was the best I ever used in the 300 H&H and the 300 Wby. Next was IMR 4350 and last H4831.
I bet you could work up an accurate load using the current versions of any of these powders. A 3000fps load with the 180 is plenty for most applications. For the largest game go to a 200 or 220 nosler partion. A game animal will never know the difference of 100-150 fps difference in a load.

I pay little attention to writers who think you only need the latest and ? greatest and who condone very long shots. I was taught to get as close as possible then get and additioal 50yds closer.
Sad that the younger shooters are only exposed to the new philosophy but the old guys are almost all gone. Unfortunately, I'm in this last group.

I wish the gun magazines would take a more definitive stand against "long range" animal shooting...say more than 400 yds. You can see the undercurrents of objection in some of the writings of individual contributors, but the ad $ wins out and the damage spreads. Wait till the anti-hunting crowd gloms onto this irresponsible behavior.

New to forum. Found this thread. Made me grin. Pulled a “safe queen” out recently and am prepping it for bull elk in late November. Rifle is a Remington 700 Limited Edition Classic in .300 H&H Magnum. Plan on using 180 grain Nosler Partitions, new Norma brass and Federal 215 Match primers. Initial powders will be IMR 4350, IMR 4831 and H-4831SC. This is going to be fun!

I agree I was only allowed iron sights till I got older and bought my first scope.

Possibly a good reminder, that with all the new 300mag type rounds around, that are supposed to be the super duper pooper scooper at 1000yds, the 300H&H already did that 100 yrs ago.

I took a 1950 M70 in 300 Magnum (300 H&H) to Zimbabwe in 2009 with a 1964 Leopold 3x9. By the new gun writers nothing about that combo should have been able to even kill a gopher. Great cartridge!
I bought a 300 H&H Winchester Model 70 from the '50s to take on a trip to Africa. Trip didn’t happen. It has period peep sights and I also got a post 64 in 30-06 and put on a similar sight to practice with.
Maybe someday.

I have a pre 64 30/06 sitting in the safe too. Pretty much shoots any factory ammo into 3/4". Classic's!

My grandpa, on Dad's side, had two hunting rifles, both model 70's (To him, a rifle was a Winchester, a pistol was a Colt). One was a 270, the other was a 300 H&H. Dad's Winchester was a pre-war 30/06. He had this rechambered in 1963 to 308 Norma. I inherited this and rebarreled it, again in 308 Norma. 70 gr of 4350 produces 3060 fps with a 180. Later, I fitted another barrel chambered for the 30 Newton. Since the case capacities were identical, it was no surprise that the same load produced the same velocity.
The 300 H&H would likely have never become much of a thing in North America if Winchester had chosen to chamber the 30 Newton instead. It matched or exceeded H&H performance; it fit the Model 54 action (and the Model 70) without cutting away a bunch of steel. Newton and Winchester didn't get along though, so there you have it. WH

I have a late 50s Browning FN Safari in 308 NM, original barrel. A fairly robust two diameter barrel. The most accurate bolt rifle I have ever had and shot, production hunting rifle that is. Second best, a Safari grade .338 Win mag. Those rifles were and are so nice if in good shape and the barrel is not shot out.

Very cool...I have a 1989 M700 300 Weatherby Classic (the last rifle I hunted elk with) and now a 1955 M721B 300 H&H. (I recently also bought a Smith and Wesson (Husqvarna) Model A 300 Win Mag to round out my 300 "belted Magnums", hahaa)

Some 300 HH rifles were converted to 300 Weatherby. If you are buy a 300 HH make sure it hasn't been converted.
