Degreasing bullets?

I assume you are talking about prior to moly coating since I can't think of any other reason you would want to do this????

Back when I used to do that, I found acetone worked very well and had the advantage of drying extremely quickly.

I dont intend on moly coating, but the custom bullets I just received still have the lube from the mfg. They are almost sticky and I wanted to clean em up prior to shooting.

The acetone was recommended, I am just not sure how to apply it? What process, or stuff, did you use to rinse them in the acetone?

Thanks!!!

Mark

I just tossed the bullets into a container of some sort, poured in a decent splash of acetone, sloshed them around a bit and then pored off the acetone into another container. The bullets were spread out on a baking tray and left outside for the last remaining solvent to evaporate. They were dry in literally 5 minutes. It's important to pour off the acetone rather than let the whole lot evaporate since if you do the later, the original wax will just be left behind and you might as well start over.

Make sure you use a well ventilated area, preferably outdoors) since the fumes are moderately toxic. It's also extremely flammable. It's also not advisable to have direct skin contact with acetone - do a web search for "acetone MSDS" to locate a material safety data sheet for further precautions.

This is a couple weeks old by now, so you probably have already cleaned 'em. For what it's worth, I use Iosso liquid case cleaner for my bullets before I coat them with tungsten-disulfide,Danzac). It appears to be some type of extra-strength detergent, but it cleans cases and bullets so fast you won't believe it. Then rinse well in hot water, this stuff is so safe you can do it in the kitchen sink!) and leave on a towel to dry off.

Thing I like about it with cases is that it cleans the whole case, in and out, in about one minute. Bullets look like they just came from the jeweler!

Acetone will definitely do the job. Some guys use paint thinner, too. I just don't like the fumes and flammability of having acetone around.

I use plain old denatured alcohol to clean my bullets before I molly them. I put 1 or 2 hundred bullets in a suitable container, pour enough alcohol to just cover bullets slosh around for a minute or two and rapidly pour off dirty alcohol. ,I usually save this dirty Alcohol for a first bath on the next batch of bullets I do.) Then I repeat with fresh alcohol, drain at let dry in a clean shop towel. Takes only a few minutes to dry thoroughly. I try to use denatured alcohol when ever I can, it seems to be the least dangerous of the chemicals we could use. I've inhaled enough bad stuff in my life don't need any more.

I think the Iosso cleaner is 4 parts water, 1 part white vineger, and a squirt of dishwashing detergent. I use to use this mixture in the past to clean cases quickly. When I got the Iosso stuff and it smells the same and works the same.

I know I'm coming to this discussiona little late, but don't overlook hot water and dishwashing detergent,Joy, etc.). They have good grease cutting agents and you avoid all manner of contact with caustic and hazardous materials. Most bullet lube is easy to remove with soap. Worth trying before getting into "heavier" stuff.
I degrease all my bullets like this before moly-coating and it works well for me.

A bullet maker in Calgary many years ago shot his bullets as they came out of the dies .He did well I'm told .I think it would keep them from tarnishing or worse in storage. In any case I would just gently clean with a towel and shoot-no cleaners.

Thanks for all the replys!!

I used the Acetone and it worked great, but I don't like the idea of using it again if I have other options. I think I will try the dish soap method as I like the idea of a non-toxic cleaner, plus, I already have some and it is the right price!!

I don't think too many people clean their bullets if shooting naked before shoting. I wonder if someone would be willing to do a test on fouling using naked bullets.

Shoot so many from a clean bore with uncleaned bullets

Bore scope it.

CLean it down throughly.

Shoot so same number from same gun with cleaned bullets

bore scope it.

It would be great with a video like the lilja videos.

Wonder if it would be worth wild.

Just throwing it out there for some technosavy people.

RHINOUT!

all, most of them ) lubricant are hydrophil so with time they became a good source of oxydation .

If you want to keep tigh as possible the difference between cold bore and warm bore, use clean bullet un greasy bullet is not to bad

try to dip a box of Sierra in a cup of car paint thinner and check how greasy the bullet are .

after let them dry on a paper towell

and shoot them ; accuracy gain is not 50% each time you improved something but % by % you increase it

degreasing bullets is a must before moly coating

good shooting
