Deer and Snow

CWD is said to be passed in feeding yards. But I am certainly no expert. All i can say is if that d^MN buck that destroyed my new tree in my lawn comes back, he is gonna get a 25 caliber ear ring.
Since you mentioned CWD thought I would post a video link regarding a possible cure on the horizon. If this guy is correct, the prion story the game departments have been pushing is bogus. I can't verify the veracity of anything said in the following video, but it is interesting to say the least.

Legal in Ohio on private land. Illegal on public lands. Michigan has a baiting ban state wide in the entire lower part of the state. The UP remains open to baiting. A congressman has introduced a bill to reverse the baiting ban in Michigan. We'll see where that goes. I've been feeding deer all winter long here at my place. I think it's something partially necessary for the deer in some cases. We had a bad ice storm twice leaving 2" of ice covering everything and made it tough to find food. Had about 20 deer eating my shrubs, trees and plants next to the house. Supplemental feeding is not s bad thing.

Not my knowledge there is no scientific proof that baiting/feeding deer is spreading the CWD disease. That's been an on going argument for years. No state can clearing prove that it does. Once they absolutely can prove that it does, baiting WILL be banned in every state that has CWD. This is something you can count on.

I personally don't care whether someone chooses to hunt over bait or not. I do not believe however, that banning baiting has much affect on combatting the spread of CWD. I base that partially on observing deer using licking branches. I have watched young deer stand on their hind legs to participate in the licking branch ritual. So what next in the battle to halt CWD, cut down all trees with low hanging branches?

We'll here in my home state, deer gather and have been gathering under fruit trees, oaks, beech etc. Centuries of this and food plot feeding nose to nose hasn't negetively affected there existence. Suddenly now, it has. I don't buy it. IF there was proof of feeding deer by humans by placing it in the woods was causing disease, I'd be for banning the issue. Since it does not, I'm not onboard with the state banning what we as hunters pay for as a resource. Control is what the DNR want and it's what they are getting. Hunters, sportsman pay for what we hunt. Bird feeders, orchards, agriculture and wild forage all contain deer in groups and herds. This will not change regardless of these banning laws. Not wanting to make this thread a CWD bait banning one but it's an issue today in many states.

I don't either. That was not the intent of my thread but......

I appreciate you guys discussing this in a civil way, and your opinions, but if the discussion just has to continue, could someone start another thread please.

Thanks.

Jim

For some reason this was a strange Winter though it did have the deer feeding close to my house and appearing to need more food than they normally need.
