Deep Wood Fun Gun / Load

A friend of mine who was on his way out, brought me two 308 bolt guns, telling me to keep one and sell one and bring him the money. One was a Rem 788, and the other was a Western Field M780. I was gonna just keep the Remington, because we all know it's a great little rifle, but I decided to go shoot them both and see just what happened.

Well, the 788 shot a couple groups just under 2", and the Monkey Wards gun shot a couple just under an inch. This was with a box of factory ammo, and after shooting both I just liked the Western Field better. I know plenty of ya will call me crazy but --

It's now my wife's elk rifle, and a great addition to our hunting guns. 308 in a bolt gun is just what the doctor might order for almost anything. jd

Even without seeing who posted, I knew it was you JD, by the custom sandbags ala Levi509. ;)
And I am hurt...you didn't call me to tell me you had a 788 on sale. So next time, a 222 ok? with discount...so I can forgive you.

I have a mauser 30-06 with a 20 inchMontana rifleman barrel that I load 125 BTs in, I have been using 3031, but later did some research and found as you did H4895 is the ticket.

I haven't heard of the Montana Rifle company. Quick search found them and their rifles. Very appealing rifles, claw extractor included. Thanks !

No not a Montana gun. A 100 year old Turkish Mauser action with a Montana rifleman barrel. They made barrels for sale to the shooter for a while and decided to make barrels for manufacturers instead, they sold of all the blanks they had and would contour them for an additional $20. I bought 3 , and wish I had bought them all. I think the owner was related to the people that make the rifles.

IM a beer guy did not no.
I may try some.
Give it a shot. (pun intended)

WHen I can afford it, I drink Van Winkle Family Reserve(15,20,23yr old) Liquid ambrosia. Better than a free Krieger barrel! Be careful though, you'll be spending more than on your rifles once you taste it.

Friend died and his sister left me his Savage 99 in 308. Sure I have shot it but not impressed. Now, motivated by good bourbon, I just may try some bullets lighter than the 150's I tried. Might even use it on deer now.

I'll bring to that.
