Decent Gauge Blocks?

I picked up my set of Jo Blocks at a yard sale for $25. At the time (almost 20 yrs ago) even I didnt know what they were, just thought they were cool and my dad would like them. He had a set already. Of course, now, I not only know what they are, but use them in my shop. One would be surprised how many used sets are floating around out there. I always try to find some used quality stuff first, but if I cant, then I will buy the cheaper stuff but only if I dont plan on using it a lot. If I plan on using it a lot I drop the coin. The nice thing however is even teh cheaper stuff is usually spot on accurate, surprisingly.

I bought some older brown and sharpe blocks a few weeks ago. 90% of them were serial numbered and recorded on the inside of box. I don't need all of them. four or five major sizes would be good enough for making sure your stuff is accurate I would look on craigslist or ebay.

When it comes to machine tools , Q.C. items , the words inexpensive ,and quality ( accurate ) generally don't go in the same sentence . For a reason .

That depends a bit on what you call and arm and a leg.

I bought these on Amazon a couple years ago and have found them very adequate for general machining work. I use them far more frequently that I imagined and am very happy with them.

Jo blocks....look for used , as long as they still "wring" together there probably fine. I have a few sets, ceramic for the surface plate, gauge blocks do come in different grades, AA being the only ones to use on a surface plate, A for the QC lab, B to check mics on the floor.....what use are these for? A cheaper option might be buy individual gauge pins. I find myself using gauge pins more and more.

Gage pins are an excellent choice. I use gage pins a lot more than gage blocks. Great for determining hole sizes but also very useful for thicknesses, etc.
